Watts Named as Shirebrook Boss

15th May, 2013

Shirebrook Town have announced that Julian Watts, who yesterday stepped down as boss at Baris NCEL Division One rivals Hallam, is their new first team manager.

Joining him at Langwith Road as player/assistants will be ex-Rainworth Miners Welfare duo Mark Camm and Danny Bacon, both of who are keen to get into the coaching side of the game. All three have had professional careers in English football.

42-year-old Julian Watts was probably best known as a player for Luton Town.

A defender, he started out with Rotherham United as an apprentice, but after only two years in the first team he moved on to Sheffield Wednesday.

Watts left the Owls four years later, after only 18 league appearances, to play for Leicester City, but this move didn't work out either and he wore the colours of five more teams before he arrived at Luton Town on loan in 1999. The move clearly suited Watts, as he became a first team regular, and made 67 league appearances in two seasons.

At the end of the 2000-2001, he decided to join Australian club Northern Spirit, where he played until 2004, when the club folded.

Now retired from playing in the professional game, he returned to England to set up a business in Worksop.

In September 2010 he was appointed assistant manager of NCEL Premier Division side Maltby Main before joining Shirebrook's NCEL Division One rivals Hallam as manager in January 2011.

Watts said today: "I'm really happy to be joining a local club that's on the up, and I have been very impressed with Club President James Doody's vision for Shirebrook over the next five years."

32-year-old Mansfield-born Mark Camm started his playing career at Sheffield United after being promoted to the club's first team squad at the start of the 1997-1998 campaign.

He signed for Lincoln City in August 2000, where he was mainly used as a covering midfielder, and he played just under 40 times for the club in four seasons.

Camm joined Gainsborough Trinity on loan in February 2003, before finally leaving The Imps in January 2004 to join King's Lynn.

Further moves took him to Boston United, Worksop Town and Frickley Athletic, from where he went to Rainworth on loan.

Camm then had a spell at Belper Town before re-joining Rainworth on a permanent basis last campaign.

32-year-old Danny Bacon began his playing career with Mansfield Town, his home club.

A striker, he then had a two-year spell with Hucknall Town.

In May 2005, Bacon secured a move back to the professional ranks, agreeing a one-year deal with Lincoln City, but he struggled to break into the first team, making just two substitute appearances, and in September 2005 he was allowed to join Burton Albion on loan.

However, injury struck in only his fifth game when he fractured his fibula in a game against Aldershot and the break kept him out of the squad for six months.

Given the number 10 shirt at Sincil Bank by Keith Alexander for the 2006-2007 season, he made his first start in the opening fixture at Notts County, but Bacon's injury jinx hit again as he first suffered a nasty facial cut and then injured his ankle.

After recovery and a spell out on loan at Worksop Town, Bacon left The Imps in January 2007 to sign for Hednesford Town, before further moves took him back to Hucknall Town and then Worksop Town, before signing for Rainworth.

Higginson Signs For Shirebrook

22nd March, 2013

Shirebrook Town have signed 21-year-old striker Conor Higginson from Evo-Stik First Division South side Rainworth Miners Welfare.

Delighted Shirebrook manager Mark Shaw said: "I am pleased to bring a player of Conor's standard to the club. For me it's a major signing. He is a great, talented player who should be playing at a higher level, and he fits in with everything we are trying to do here."

"Conor is a forward that is hungry and wants success, and that is what we need right here, right now to help us push on and win something this season. We need to win our remaining matches and he is the kind of player who can bolster our attacking options and create a chance out of nothing. Me and Peter Shuttleworth have worked with Conor before (at Sheffield FC) and we know just what he can bring to the team," Shaw said.

Ollerton-born Higginson began his career as a 13-year-old in the youth ranks at Mansfield Town, making his first team debut in April 2009 as a 17-year-old against Northwich Victoria. He had successful spells out on loan at Glapwell, before leaving the Stags by mutual consent in July 2011 to sign for Sheffield FC. He began this season at Grantham Town, but left the Gingerbreads to join Rainworth a couple of weeks before last Christmas.

Higginson is available for Shirebrook's home game against Appleby Frodingham this Saturday, and he said: "I'm delighted to be working with Showie (Mark Shaw) and Shutts (Peter Shuttleworth) again and I'm looking forward to trying to help put some silverware on the table for Shirebrook Town. I'll try to score as many goals as I can between now and the end of the season and, hopefully, we'll all be happy come the end of April."

Shirebrook Removed from League Cup

18th March, 2013

Shirebrook Town have been removed from the Baris NCEL League Cup, subject to appeal, for fielding a cup-tied player.

It happened during their 3-1 Third Round win at home to Staveley Miners Welfare last month when Mark Wall, who had previously played in the competition for Worksop Parramore this season, took part for the Division One club.

As per Rule 7.2, Shirebrook have been disqualified from the competition and fined ?100 and Staveley have been re-instated.

Staveley will now go to Louth Town in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday 27th March.

Shirebrook Sign Ex-Stag Winger

21st January, 2013

Shirebrook Town have announced the signing of former Mansfield Town midfielder Joel Holland.

Shirebrook manager Mark Shaw swooped for the 19-year-old winger's signature when it was revealed just before Christmas that the Stags would not be extending his six month deal with the club.

Holland successfully came through the youth ranks at the One Call Stadium and was promoted to the First Team last June, but has struggled since to break into the strong and experienced squad that manager Paul Cox has assembled in their bid for promotion to the Football League.

Meanwhile, Holland has been out on one-month loan deals this season to Chromasport UCL Premier Division side Shepshed Dynamo and Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division struggler's Eastwood Town, to give him some useful competitive game time.

A very happy Shaw said: "Joel Holland has been highly sought after by clubs at levels above."

"We believe he is a player for the future and could be a real fan-favourite at Langwith Road. It's a great scoop for us and I am thoroughly delighted to have him on board," the Shirebrook manager went on to say.

"Joel is another young player that is wanting to progress with the club and he fits into our ethos of signing younger players who have desires to push back up the levels," Shaw said.

Management Duo Leave Shirebrook

8th September, 2012

Shirebrook Town have announced tonight that manager Gary Castledine and assistant manager Jamie Kirk have left the club by mutual consent with immediate effect.

In a statement, the Baris NCEL Division One side said: "This follows an unacceptably poor start to the season of just three wins and seven losses from the ten games played so far, culminating with the home defeat against Louth Town today.

"The club will begin the search for a suitable replacement, or replacements, immediately.

"Shirebrook Town would like to thank Gary Castledine and Jamie Kirk for their efforts on behalf of the club and would also like to take this opportunity to wish them well for the future."

Shirebrook Achieve Charter Standard Status

12th July, 2012

Shirebrook Town have announced that they have achieved FA Charter Standard Club Adult Club status.

The Charter Standard Club Programme was established by the FA in February 2001 to provide recognition that clubs are well run, sustainable, with child protection and safety paramount.

It also recognises a club's commitment to coaching, player and coach development and the raising of standards of behaviour in the game.

Shirebrook Deputy Chairman Kevin Meredith says the club began the process over two years ago and, after a slow start, club secretary Aimee Radford has been the one largely responsible for giving the project the final push it needed to ensure their application was successful.

In presenting the club with their prestigious award and certificate at Langwith Road last night, Derbyshire County FA Governance Operations Manager Nigel Smith said: "It's paramount that hard working volunteers come together to work together to create a better environment for playing football, for coaches and, of course, for raising standards of behaviour. So on behalf of Derbyshire FA, it's a great award to achieve and congratulations to all at Shirebrook."

Meanwhile, Shirebrook Chairman Gary Meredith couldn't hide his obvious delight at the club's achievement, saying, "It's been hard work, but it's been very worthwhile. The FA Charter Standard Club award will help us promote a positive image of the club, whilst at the same time opening up avenues to previously unavailable much-needed funding for the club."

FA Charter Standard Club status is subject to an annual health check, as part of re-affiliation, and this will include Shirebrook tracking qualifications of volunteers and ensuring that the club is maintaining the standard of the award.
