Vikings home set for major renovation

17th May, 2023

Work to radically improve the home of Toolstation NCEL side Goole AFC is set to start towards the start of next year.

The Victoria Pleasure Grounds, that hosts the Vikings and a number of other local sports clubs, is getting a £3.5m upgrade as part of the Goole Town Deal programme with Goole Town Council responsible for delivering the project.

Following a public consultation in January, it has now been announced that work will commence in March 2024 and be completed in time for the start of the 2025/26 season.

The plans include a two tier stand/pavilion, improved car parking and a state-of-the-art 3G pitch.

In a statement, the local authority said: "The VPG plans aim to revitalise the site with modern sports facilities, which will cater for a much higher number of users to meet the demand from sports clubs.

"The facilities will enable Goole Town Council to provide an enhanced recreational offer to encourage the wider community to enjoy sports and physical activities.

"A state-of-the-art pavilion will provide a high quality experience for participants and spectators, with a strong hospitality offer.

"VPG will be transformed into a go-to venue that the people of Goole can be proud of."

Houghton takes Vikings helm

4th November, 2022

Toolstation NCEL Premier Division side Goole AFC have announced the appointment of Simon Houghton as their new manager with immediate effect.

Houghton is a well-known face in NCEL circles having been the boss at Pontefract Collieries, Shaw Lane Aquaforce and Glasshoughton Welfare as well as part of the management team at Athersley Recreation and Nostell Miners Welfare.

He takes over permanently following the resignation of Mike Carmody and Alan Jackson last month.

Joshua Schofield, who was in interim charge, will be first team coach and will take charge of Saturday's home league game with Silsden AFC as Houghton is unavailable due to a previous commitment.

A statement from the Vikings read: "First of all, we would like to place on record our thanks to everyone that applied for the role.

"All the applicants were of a very high calibre, which has made the selection process very difficult.

"However, the club is pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Houghton as the new manager of Goole AFC with immediate effect.

"In a managerial career of eighteen years, he has won promotion five times either as manager or assistant manager.

"We have every confidence that he will be able to build on the stable foundations laid by Mike and Jacko and take the club forward."

"We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to both for all their efforts and wish both all the very best for the future.
