Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #72

21st May, 2023

The 2022/23 Toolstation NCEL season came to an end on Saturday night with Emley AFC lifting the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup at Doncaster Rovers' Eco-Power Stadium.

The Pewits, who ended the league campaign in third position and also reached the Semi-Finals of the League Cup, were 2-0 winners over Premier Division rivals Maltby Main.

Richard Tracey's side thought they had taken the lead on twenty minutes through Iyrwah Gooden but he was flagged offside.

However, they broke the deadlock soon after with Paul Walker curling in their opener and it was not long until they doubled their advantage.

A mistake in the Maltby defence was pounced on by Gooden on 26 minutes and he slotted the ball past Dylan Parkin to put Emley in control.

Appeals for a spot kick for the Pewits after Donae Lawrence had gone to ground were turned down by the referee and it stayed 2-0 going into the interval.

The second half saw Brandon Bagley denied by Emley keeper Declan Lambton as Maltby looked to get back into the game.

At the other end, an effort from Gooden smacked Main's crossbar on the hour mark as his side pressed for their third.

Maltby worked hard to try and forge a breakthrough but could not get past a determined Pewits defence as the game went into injury-time.

A late red card for Joe Kenny for dissent was the only disappointment on the night for Emley who saw out the encounter to claim a 2-0 victory in front of a crowd of 640.

It was Emley's first Senior Cup triumph since 1998 and their ninth in total as they capped what has been an impressive season for them.

Maltby, meanwhile, will be disappointed that they could not lift the trophy, especially as it was manager Andy Dawson's final game in charge having been in the dugout for the Miners for over five years.

But, they had an excellent run in reaching the Final and they will look to use it as a springboard next season to improve on their thirteenth place finish in the Premier Division.
