Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #56

5th March, 2023

There was no let-up in the chase for the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division and Division One titles on Saturday as the top sides all won to keep their challenges going.

North Ferriby remain five points clear at the top of the Premier Division after a 3-0 win at Knaresborough Town who drop to twelfth.

It took 66 minutes for the deadlock to be broken for the Villagers by Danny Clarke before Oliver Donald and Joshua Morrall made sure of the victory that keeps second-placed Winterton Rangers at arms length.

Rangers, though, matched Ferriby as a first-half Steven Ridley penalty was added to in the second period by goals from Jaime Ture and Josh Walker as they beat visitors Thackley by the same scoreline.

Third-placed Emley AFC also netted three times, an early spot kick from Alex Metcalfe was followed by a second goal on the hour from Junayd Cassius-Gill before visitors Hemsworth Miners Welfare pulled one back through Nash Connolly.

Iyrwah Gooden then ensured a 3-1 win, however, that keeps the Pewits still in touch of the promotion push, six points behind Winterton with a game in hand.

Penistone Church completed a clean sweep for victories for the top four as Ryan Johnson's injury-time winner snatched all three points as they beat Barton Town 1-0 at the DSM Memorial Ground.

In the race to avoid relegation, basement side Yorkshire Amateur were the only side to pick up a point as a 2-2 home draw with Handsworth staved off confirmation of a bottom two finish for another few days.

Charlie Parnell grabbed them an equaliser in stoppage time after Joe Parkin and Alfie Dodsworth had netted for the visitors following an opener for the Ammers on 50 minutes by Alfie Wilkinson.

Bottesford Town remain the other team below the dotted line, one point away from safety, after a 2-0 loss at Hallam, Brandon Bradbury and Oliver Fearon with the goals for the Countrymen who stay sixth.

A 3-2 home loss for Goole AFC means they stay just outside the relegation zone as the away side Maltby Main raced into the unassailable lead in the opening half-hour through Alexander Hardwick, Brandon Bagley and Alister Haydock.

Oliver Russon's penalty midway through the second period brought the hosting Vikings back into it and Samuel Deacon grabbed a second but they could not complete the fightback.

Elsewhere, goals from Kayle Price and Daniel Naidole saw Golcar United come from behind to win 3-2 at Frickley Athletic who will still be looking nervously over their shoulder at the trapdoor, seven points above the bottom two, whilst United move up into ninth.

And, Eccleshill United were 2-0 down going into the final ten minutes of their home clash with Garforth Town but a Dexter Ball own goal and a Luke Sidaway leveller ensured the spoils were shared in a 2-2 draw.

Albion Sports' home clash with Silsden AFC was postponed due to ground unavailability with agreement unable to be reached on a new venue and kick-off time.

The race for the Division One crown remains a three-horse one with Campion, Harrogate Railway Athletic and Rossington Main all picking up victories.

Campion were 4-1 winners at Parkgate, Aidan Day, Stephen Crawford, Patrick Sykes and Mark Ferguson adding to their scoreline after the Steelmen had taken a fifth-minute lead through Sam Thompson.

The gap to second remains six points as the Rail claimed a dramatic 2-1 home win over Horbury Town, Daniel McDaid with an injury-time decider that could be a vital moment in Harrogate's title push and for Horbury's play-off ambitions.

Rossington are a point further behind in third after Bradley Grayson's hat-trick, plus one each from Jamie Green and Jordan Buckham, resulted in a 5-1 defeat of visitors Nostell Miners Welfare.

Wakefield AFC have strengthened their play-off ambitions as Lewis Stephens grabbed the only goal in a home victory over Selby Town and they leapfrog Staveley Miners Welfare, who drew 2-2 at Athersley Recreation, into fourth.

Daniel Ramsey and Jack Deakin scored the Trojans' goals in the opening six minutes but Lee Garside's second half double rescued a point for next-to-bottom Athersley who are now four points away from safety in the relegation battle.

Basement side Shirebrook Town played out a goalless draw at home to neighbours Retford FC and they are now five points behind Parkgate who are just above the bottom three.

The other team in the drop zone, Swallownest took advantage of Parkgate's loss as a Jack Haslam double, added to by Owen Haigh, gave them a 3-0 home victory over Armthorpe Welfare and they are now just two points behind the Steelmen with two games in hand.

Elsewhere, there were 1-0 home victories for Dronfield Town over Ollerton Town and for Glasshoughton Welfare over Brigg Town as Welfare eased their relegation fears a little.

And, it was a tale of two penalties at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic's 1-1 draw with visitors Beverley Town, Conor Glavin's spot kick for the hosts cancelled out by one from Scott Phillips.
