Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #39

29th December, 2022

This midweek saw a full programme of Toolstation NCEL matches with leaders North Ferriby and Campion both carrying on from where they left off before an impromptu winter break for most sides due to bad weather and Christmas.

Ferriby were one of many Premier Division teams who were playing their first match in 24 days as they continued their winning streak, making it seven victories in a row as they beat hosts Goole AFC 2-0.

Amir Berchil and Danny Earl struck towards the end of the first half at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds to maintain the Villagers' eleven-point gap at the summit whilst the Vikings remain in the bottom two of the table.

Winterton Rangers move up to second, Luke Anderson netting both of their goals in their 2-1 home victory over Bottesford Town, as they replace Emley AFC who drop to fifth after a hugely entertaining 4-4 draw with visitors Penistone Church.

The away side stormed into a four goal lead with Jordan Coduri, Wayne Hughes, Leon Hurles-Brook and Thomas Charlesworth seemingly putting them in an unassailable position.

But, Emley produced the comeback of the season so far in the final quarter of the game as Iyrwah Gooden set the ball rolling before a Joe Jagger brace and an equaliser from James Walshaw saw the spoils shared.

Garforth Town and Silsden AFC also go above Emley in the table following away wins with Charlie Marshall getting the only goal of the game for Garforth at Knaresborough Town.

Talent Ndlovu netted twice for Silsden as they came from behind late on to win 2-1 at basement side Yorkshire Amateur.

It was a day of enormous crowds in the top flight with 4,183 people watching the Premier Division's ten games, including 1,029 who were at Sandygate to witness Hallam's 2-0 home victory over Handsworth.

They had to wait until the 75th minute for Jack Brownell's breakthrough before Bradley Kerr quickly sealed the three points with their second.

There were also attendances of over 500 at Goole, Emley and at Frickley Athletic who beat Hemsworth Miners Welfare 3-0 thanks to goals from Lloyd Smith, Joshua Haigh and Alhassane Keita.

Elsewhere, Ben Grech-Brooksbank and Lewis Waddington were the scorers for Thackley in a 2-0 win at Eccleshill United and Thomas Waudby struck twice as Barton Town defeated visitors Maltby Main 4-1.

The most goals, meanwhile, were at the Citadel Stadium as Golcar United beat their hosts Albion Sports 6-3 with a goal apiece for Adam Field, Kayle Price, Slater Barkham-Barnes, Buddy Cox, Nathen Woodward and Daniel Naidole.

In Division One, where matches were being played for the first time since the 6th of December, Campion's lead at the top has grown to eleven points after their 4-0 home victory over Dronfield Town whilst their nearest challengers all dropped points.

Daniel Illingworth's opener was added to by an Aidan Day brace and a goal from Aidan Kirby as their seemingly unstoppable charge to the title continues.

Second-placed Harrogate Railway Athletic drew 2-2 at Retford FC having led 2-0 by the half-hour mark through Kieran Greenway and Albert Ibrahimi.

Haydn Goddard pulled one back for the Choughs in the second period and Alex Wonham levelled it up with a penalty in the 67th minute.

Rossington Main rescued a point at Ollerton Town thanks to an injury time equaliser from Ross Hannah in a 1-1 draw and they climb into third above Horbury Town who lost 2-1 at home to basement side Glasshoughton Welfare in Wednesday night's game.

That match was even more dramatic with Welfare's winner coming deep into stoppage time, Ashley Bell with the decider that moves his side to within four points of safety.

Wakefield AFC consolidated fifth spot with a 4-3 win at Armthorpe Welfare, Lewis Stephens, Billy Mole, Cory Woodward and Robbie Miller with their goals whilst Rhys Plater, Cian Guest and Matthew Hughes found the net for the hosts.

Staveley Miners Welfare stay sixth after Max Hatton's injury time leveller saw visitors Swallownest take a point away from Inkersall Road in a 2-2 draw.

There were home wins for Selby Town, 1-0 over Shirebrook Town thanks to Liam Flanagan's last gasp winner, and for Beverley Town who also claimed the spoils at the death, Samuel Calvert the hero in a 2-1 victory over Parkgate.

The other two games both ended 1-1 with Nostell Miners Welfare drawing at Athersley Recreation whilst Brigg Town were pegged back by visitors Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
