Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #38

22nd December, 2022

Hemsworth Miners Welfare came from two goals down to beat Worksop Town and end their hosts' long winning run to progress in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

When the hosting Tigers went 2-0 up after just eighteen minutes, it looked likely that they would make it twelve successive victories but their Toolstation NCEL Premier Division opponents staged a fantastic comeback.

Nash Connolly and Ben Gelder struck to restore parity by the interval and Connolly's second just before the hour mark claimed a superb 3-2 win for Hemsworth at the runaway Pitching In Northern Premier Division leaders.

It was the first game to take place in seven days after freezing weather saw all NCEL matches postponed at the weekend and the previous Wednesday.

And, it was Hemsworth who had won the previous match as Connolly grabbed a hat-trick and Gelder claimed a brace as they won 5-2 at home to Thackley to climb to sixth in the Premier Division.

Thomas Greaves and Ben Grech-Brooksbank netted for the visiting Dennyboys who stayed seventeenth in the table.

Back to this midweek's action and, on Wednesday, there were penalty shoot-out wins for Albion Sports and Nostell Miners Welfare in their County Cup games.

Sports produced a major upset as they knocked out Vanarama National League side FC Halifax Town in a West Riding County Cup Second Round tie that was played at Brighouse Town FC.

Hass Gorji and Zak Khan twice drew the Lions level in their 2-2 draw and their persistence was rewarded as they went through 5-4 on spot kicks.

Nostell, meanwhile, drew 3-3 at fellow NCEL Division One side Worsbrough Bridge Athletic before also progressing with a 5-4 victory on penalties in their Second Round tie in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup.

Tawheed Ahmed had put Nostell two-up by the half-hour mark before Conor Glavin's penalty and a Michael Jepps strike drew the scores back level by the 57th minute.

Joe Wood restored the away side's advantage before Harley Holt forced the shoot-out with the Briggers' third as the game entered its final moments.

Four friendlies also took place with Thackley winning 2-1 at Steeton, courtesy of goals from Simon Poole and Stephen Crawford, whilst Beverley Town were beaten 2-0 by Bridlington Town and Campion went down 5-1 at Pontefract Collieries.

In Wednesday's friendly, Rossington Main won 3-1 at home to Retford FC as Reiss Harrison, Paul Sherburn and Monosse Kianga netted for the hosts after Liam Cross had given the visitors the lead in the all-Division One encounter.
