Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #30

17th November, 2022

Winterton Rangers have moved up to third in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division following their 2-1 home win over fellow top eight side Handsworth in midweek.

The visitors would have gone above their hosts with a victory but Samuel Aynsley struck at around sixteen minutes in each half to give Rangers a two goal cushion before an own goal by keeper Nathan Popple brought the Ambers back into the game.

Winterton kept their advantage intact and close the gap with second placed Emley AFC, whose home match with Knaresborough Town was one of four fixtures postponed due to heavy rain on Tuesday, to three points.

Basement side Yorkshire Amateur raced into a two goal lead at home to Hallam with Newton Sila-Conde and Jordan Spencer striking in the opening seventeen minutes.

But, the visiting Countrymen pulled one back through Oliver Fearon in first half stoppage time, Steven Wankiewicz levelled matters early in the second period, and Fearon's second on 72 minutes saw them take all three points in a 3-2 victory.

Frickley Athletic, meanwhile, were held to a 1-1 home draw by Eccleshill United, Lloyd Smith's first half opener for the hosts cancelled out after the interval by Jack Crook.

Thackley's home game with Penistone Church was another fixture to fall foul of a waterlogged pitch.

Only one of three scheduled Division One games survived with Armthorpe Welfare ultimately triumphing 3-2 at home to Brigg Town in a rollercoaster match.

Louis Wardle put Welfare ahead on twelve minutes but goals in the opening minutes of the second half from Martin Pembleton and Conner Harman gave a 2-1 advantage to the Zebras.

Jamie Austin was then the hero, netting twice in the final quarter-of-an-hour, to secure the hosts a victory that moves them up to ninth whilst Brigg stay fifth.

Retford FC's home clash with Shirebrook Town and Ollerton Town's trip to Wakefield AFC were called off due to the bad weather.

Dronfield Town and Golcar United enjoyed success in their respective county cups with Dronfield going through 3-0 against Borrowash Victoria in the Second Round of the Derbyshire Senior Cup.

Joe Pearson, Callum Mawbey and Matthew Ord all struck in the second period to send Chris Millington's team into the next stage.

Golcar defeated visitors Ossett United 3-1 at the same round of the West Riding County Cup with Kayle Price's double added to in stoppage time by Malakai Phillip.

Beverley Town came close to causing an upset in the Second Round of the East Riding Senior Cup as they led 3-2 at Bridlington Town with seconds remaining, thanks to a Reece Moody brace and a goal from Ryan Nicholls.

But, the Pitching In Northern Premier League hosts grabbed a last gasp equaliser and then won the penalty shoot-out 5-4 to sneak through to the Third Round.

And, North Ferriby were beaten 3-1 at home by Hall Road Rangers with Thomas Corner netting a late consolation for the Villagers as they went out to their Humber Premier League visitors.
