Baris NCEL 2012/13 Match Review #9
2nd September, 2012
Eleven Baris NCEL sides booked their place in the Second Round Qualifying of the FA Carlsberg Vase at the weekend whilst Scarborough Athletic put pressure on the Premier Division leaders and Athersley Recreation went top of Division One.
Friday night saw two matches with Glasshoughton Welfare becoming the first side through to the next stage of the Vase, winning 2-1 at fellow Premier Division outfit Worksop Parramore.
Liam Radford and Andrew Fieldhouse both struck at the start of the second period for the visitors and, even though the home side threatened a comeback with a Lee Whittington goal thirteen minutes from time, it was Glasshoughton who progressed.
The other game that evening was in Division One where two goals from Lee Stevenson helped Cleethorpes Town to a 3-2 win in an entertaining game at AFC Emley, moving the league newcomers up into eighth spot by the end of the weekend.
Saturday saw seventeen Vase ties with the most impressive performance coming from Thackley who won 5-1 at Northern League side, West Allotment Celtic.
Chris Davey got both their first half goals before Adam Hill made it 3-0 on 52 minutes.
Sean Reid's penalty on the hour gave Celtic hope but Matthew Morgan restored Thackley's three goal advantage from the spot and Hill added the fifth with eleven minutes remaining.
Another five of our sides beat teams from other leagues with Liversedge requiring extra-time to dispatch North Shields, 2-1.
Adam Rowntree had seemingly put the visitors into the next round when he scored on 75 minutes but James Rothell rescued the game for Sedge in injury time and Kieran Corley struck the winner as the game looked to be heading for a replay.
A Sam Foulds brace helped Maltby Main to a 3-2 win at Irlam whilst David Cockerill also got on the scoresheet twice in Teversal's 4-2 home victory over Radcliffe Olympic.
Arnold Town came from behind at the interval to beat Thurnby Nirvana 5-3 at Eagle Valley with a scintillating second-half display and Pickering Town were 3-1 winners at Billingham Town with goals from Liam Shepherd, Liam Salt and Tom Fenwick.
The other four victorious NCEL sides defeated league rivals as top scorer Nathan Forbes-Swindells grabbed his ninth of the season in Parkgate's 1-0 win at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
Matt Savage struck twice for Long Eaton United in their 3-0 victory over Lincoln Moorlands Railway at Grange Park and another two goal hero was James Eyles for Nostell Miners Welfare who won 3-1 at Hemsworth Miners Welfare.
Two goals in the last twenty minutes from Mark La Rocca and Chris Garth saw Bottesford Town through 2-0 at home to Hallam.
Appleby Frodingham, Barton Town Old Boys, Dinnington Town, Eccleshill United, Grimsby Borough, Rossington Main and Tadcaster Albion all bowed out to non-NCEL opposition.
In the Premier Division, Scarborough moved to within two points of leaders Worksop Parramore as first-half goals from Robert Hawkes and Ryan Blott helped them to a 2-1 home victory over Staveley Miners Welfare.
Luke Gibson and Ben Charlesworth struck in the opening sixteen minutes in Brighouse Town's 3-0 win at home to Winterton Rangers that sees them climb up into fourth spot.
Bridlington Town won 2-0 at Retford United in the battle of last season's top two, Josh Greening and Carl Stewart with the goals, whilst a Rob Petch double put Hall Road Rangers on their way to a 4-2 victory over visitors Armthorpe Welfare.
Athersley Recreation are at the summit in Division One after Tom Harban and Jack Briscoe found the net in a 2-1 win at Louth Town.
They replace Clipstone Welfare who went down 2-1 at Pontefract Collieries, Jamie Tryner's goal for them sandwiched by strikes from Tom Copping and Brenton Leister for the hosts.
Yorkshire Amateur are third after their 3-3 draw at Knaresborough Town whilst Askern Villa won 3-1 at Shirebrook Town and Albion Sports were comfortable 5-0 victors at Selby Town.
