Selby Look Back at Excellent Season

2nd June, 2009

Selby Town held their presentation night on Saturday at the Selby Times Stadium clubhouse and the event was well attended.

The Players' Player of the Year was won by Scott Pickles whilst Leigh Wood picked up the Supporters' Player of the Year and the Management's Player of the Year awards.

The Clubman of the Year went to Andy Lodge who was unable to attend due to a prior engagement, so Paul Leister received the award on his behalf.

There were bouquets of flowers awarded to the ladies who help out on matchdays throughout the season and the club has thanked them.

They have also thanked the ball boys and raffle ticket sellers and turnstile operatives.

The pre season itinerary for The Robins will be announced soon and season ticket forms can be obtained from the clubhouse or secretary Tommy Arkley.

Robins Close To Perfect Record

15th March, 2009

Selby Town are appealing for help after they came so close to compiling a complete record of their ninety year history.

Three Robins supporters have been poring through the history books to find all their club's results as the North Yorkshire side celebrate their special anniversary.

But, they have come agonisingly just one score short and are now hoping that someone out there can help them out.

The game that has eluded them so far is their 1962/63 Yorkshire League match at Yorkshire Amateur.

Secretary Tommy Arkley said: "If anyone out there can help us out with any detail of this fixture, the result, the scorers etc. that would be fantastic.

"All avenues the trio have tried thus far have drawn a blank, so we are appealing to anyone who might know."

Anyone who can help is asked to contact Tommy on 07830 218657.

Robins Anniversary Plans Continue

12th February, 2009

As part of their 90th anniversary celebrations, Selby Town have arranged a friendly against a Selby Select XI.

The idea was manager Bob Lyon's who said: "For as long as I can remember, local players, parents and supporters alike have been trying to tell me who should be playing for Selby Town FC and who should not.

"This is their opportunity to prove their point.

"All local players should be chomping at the bit to take on Selby's senior side and then people can tell me if I was right or wrong!"

Ian Jennings, manager of local side Kartiers FC, has been asked to oversee selection of the team and pick Selby's finest from all the local Saturday teams in the area.

The Selby Town committee decided on Ian simply because Kartiers are the highest placed local team and he has been at the management game for 20 years or more, so he should know the Town's better players.

Hopefully everyone can put any differences to one side to play in this one-off game.

Selby Town are getting the game sanctioned by the West Riding County FA and providing the insurance cover for all players, plus kits officials etc. at their own expense.

The game is to take place at The Selby Times Stadium on Tuesday 3rd March with a 7.45pm kick off, obviously at the current time subject to the state of the pitch.

Admission will be ?2.50 for adults and ?1.50 for season ticket holders, OAPs and children.

This is the first game to celebrate the 90th anniversary and hopefully the people of Selby will support the event.

Anybody who is interested in sponsoring the game in any way please contact Tommy Arkley on 07830 218657.

Meanwhile, the club have been contacted by who they believe to be their oldest surviving ex-player.

Ken Green, who is aged 80 and now living in Huntington, York, played for Selby Town in the 1950/51 season as a striker and helped the club finish runner up in the now defunct Yorkshire League.

He was transferred to Grimsby Town for a fee unknown and the money helped provide the funds to allow Selby Town to move from "The Bowling Green" down Portholme Road to their current Selby Times Stadium Ground at Flaxley Road.

He has some more interesting stories to tell of his time with Selby but he wishes to keep those until the reunion night which is on the 6th of March.

If anyone knows of any ex-player older than Ken then the club would like them to get in touch.

Robins Prepare For Birthday

31st January, 2009

Preparations are well underway for Selby Town's 90th birthday celebrations.

As part of their festivities, they are setting up a friendly against a Selby Town XI that will consist of players from teams in the area.

It will take place at the Selby Times Stadium on Tuesday the 3rd of March - the NCEL have agreed to keep that date open so that the game can go ahead.

Also, the Robins are arranging a reunion and want as many past and present players, committee members, supporters, sponsors, etc. to attend.

It will take place at the Selby Times Stadium clubhouse on the following Friday.

They also want people to bring along any mementos, photos etc. to show old acquaintances and share memories.

The club want an idea of approximate numbers so they have asked anyone who would like to attend to contact the secretary, Tommy Arkley, on 07830 218657.

Robins Arrange Friendly

14th December, 2008

Selby Town, having lost their last two games due to the wet weather, have arranged a friendly at their Selby Times Stadium on Tuesday night.

They host Frickley Athletic with a 7.45pm kick off and all season ticket holders will get in at a discount.

Weather permitting, the game gives Manager, Bob Lyon, a chance to look at some of his fringe players and keep the rest of the squad ticking over.

Frickley also lost their fixture due to the weather so they will be fielding a strong side.

Secretary Thomas Arkley told the KoolSport NCEL website: "All we need is a couple of dry days and we could have an attractive game."

Robins Break-In Anger

17th October, 2008

Selby Town's joy at a midweek Premier Division win at Armthorpe Welfare was destroyed by a break-in at their ground.

It is believed that burglars got into the Selby Times Stadium sometime during Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Kits were strewn all over the clubhouse along with paperwork from the office files.

The bar door was smashed in and the till had been rifled whilst bottles of spirits, the TV Digibox, the pay phone, the petty cash box and even the charity collection box were taken.

Secretary Thomas Arkley said: "It is soul destroying for the committee - so much so, that some are wondering why we bother.

"The culprits obviously knew there wouldn't be anyone at the ground that evening.

"The police have dusted for prints etc. but the chances of catching the culprits are not good.

"But, we now face some extra cost of repairing the damage and making the place even more secure."
