Legends Back Eagles
27th April, 2009
Bradford City legends played a fundraising football match to help out a struggling KoolSport NCEL club, writes the Telegraph & Argus.
Bantams bosses Stuart McCall, Wayne Jacobs and David Wetherall, joined big names Dean Windass and John Hendrie playing at Plumpton Park, Wrose, against the Eccleshill United select XI yesterday in front of hundreds of fans.
The City side may have come out on top on the day, winning 1-0, but Eccleshill still have a lot to gain from the event.
It was organised after the club, known to fans as the Eagles, contacted Bradford City's director of operations David Baldwin two months ago to ask their Football League neighbours for help.
Club secretary Mark Holstead said: "We have been having problems financially over the last six months or so.
"We hope to raise a lot of money from the event."
Eccleshill have faced trouble both on and off the pitch in past months, with a recent relegation and money worries which almost caused the club to fold.
"We need events like this so football can continue in the area next season," said Mr Holstead.
"I think for the community it is absolutely vital the team continues to exist. Players come here from as young as six and up - football has been part of our community for many years now.
"It is so important and the club really needs a boost. It came very close to closing in recent months but events like this should hopefully put us back on our feet."
