Baris NCEL Review - Season 2011/12 #49
1st April, 2012
It was Wembley heartbreak for Staveley Miners Welfare as they were edged out in their FA Vase Semi-Final clash with Dunston UTS on Saturday.
Trailing by a single goal in the away leg a week earlier, the Baris NCEL Premier Division outfit got themselves back on level terms in the reverse fixture in the seventh minute with a goal from Simon Barraclough.
Andrew Bulford quickly levelled the score on the day and put the STL Northern League side back in front before the game seemingly swung Staveley's direction once again.
Bulford was sent off for a second yellow card on the half-hour and Christopher Coy gave the home side a 2-1 lead before the interval to make it 2-2 on aggregate.
However, Staveley could not make their extra man count in the second period and then also found themselves down to ten men when Barraclough was red carded with twenty minutes remaining.
Then, just as it looked as though the game would go into extra time, an enthralling match in front of 1,050 people ended with Steve Goddard netting on 84 minutes to send Dunston through 3-2 on aggregate.
It was a very disappointing end to Staveley's FA Vase campaign but they can be very proud of their achievements in reaching the last four of the competition.
And, good luck to Dunston who will now face West Auckland in an all-Northern League Final at Wembley.
In the Premier Division, Retford United's lead at the top was cut to one point as they drew 2-2 at Scarborough Athletic.
The Badgers were behind after five minutes through Bill Law but a Warren Hatfield double had them in the lead by the half-hour.
Scarborough, however, earned a draw through James Ghaichem's 65th-minute strike as they move up into third, seven points behind Retford with four games to play.
Second-placed Bridlington Town took advantage as Josh Greening's hat-trick at struggling Lincoln Moorlands Railway gave them a 3-0 victory that narrowed the gap on Retford who the Seasiders have a game in hand on.
Winterton Rangers' title hopes faded as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Parkgate with goals from Brian Cusworth and Ashley Worsfold either side of half-time and they drop into fourth whilst Parkgate move up into sixth.
Brighouse Town fell to seventh as they needed an equaliser with the last kick of the ball from Shane Hamilton to pick up a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Long Eaton United after William Mellors-Blair had put the visitors ahead early in the second period.
Next-to-bottom Maltby Main drew 3-3 with visitors Barton Town Old Boys but they dropped two, what could prove to be vital, points in dramatic fashion as Simon Spencer levelled in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Main are now five points away from Lincoln Moorlands who are just outside the bottom two with four games remaining.
Elsewhere in the Premier Division, a Chris Davey double secured Thackley a 2-0 win at Tadcaster Albion whilst Carl Stewart also struck twice in Pickering Town's victory at Liversedge and Liam Garner struck with two minutes remaining as Arnold Town beat visitors Armthorpe Welfare, 2-1.
In Division One, Handsworth took a big step towards the title as a 2-1 win at Rossington Main extended their lead at the top to six points.
Sam Smith scored the winner with eleven minutes remaining after Tom Roebuck had cancelled out Main's opener from Jonathan Mirfin.
Second-placed Albion Sports were beaten 3-1 at home by Glasshoughton Welfare, the visitors moving up into fourth with the victory and they are now six points behind Sports in the promotion race.
Pontefract Collieries dropped to fifth after their 1-1 draw at Hemsworth Miners Welfare, Liam Ormsby put them ahead early on but Lee Dawson quickly restored parity for the home side.
Appleby Frodingham were confirmed as this season's bottom side as they went down 4-0 to the only side they could catch up, Grimsby Borough.
Andrew Taylor and James Petronzio had the away team two-up by 25 minutes and they added to the scoreline in the second period through David Unsworth and Richard Creer.
Craig Dalton's 80th minute winner secured Louth Town a 3-2 victory at home to Shirebrook Town whilst Scott Holt struck twice, once from the penalty spot, as AFC Emley came from behind to beat visitors Bottesford Town, 2-1.
And, there were away wins for Dinnington Town, Eccleshill United and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic at Hallam, Teversal and Yorkshire Amateur, respectively.
