Baris NCEL Review - Season 2011/12 #47

25th March, 2012

Staveley Miners Welfare will still be very confident of reaching the Final of the Carlsberg Vase at Wembley despite a narrow defeat in the first leg of their semi with Dunston UTS.

The Inkersall Road side travelled up to the STL Northern League outfit and were denied a goalless draw as Andrew Bulford scored in the 78th minute to give the Gateshead based side the slenderest of margins with a 1-0 victory in front of a crowd just shy of 1,000.

But, Staveley's performance will give them great hope that they can overturn the deficit in the reverse fixture in Derbyshire next Saturday.

The Baris NCEL Premier Division title race swung in Retford United's favour as the Badgers thumped visitors Hall Road Rangers, 7-0.

For the second Saturday running, Karl Slack struck a hat-trick whilst new signing Carl Snowden also got on the scoresheet along with Carl Haslam, Adam Scott and Jamie Brown.

Retford are now three points ahead of Bridlington Town having played one game more after the Seasiders fell to a 3-1 defeat at mid-table Pickering Town.

Carl Stewart got all of the Pikes' goals before Nathan Cook grabbed a consolation with around ten minutes remaining.

Scarborough Athletic moved up into the top four as Ryan Blott and Bill Law struck both sides of the interval in a 2-0 victory at home to Thackley.

Brighouse Town's 7-1 victory at Parkgate saw them climb up into sixth over their hosts, Tom Matthews netting twice in what was perhaps a surprisingly easy afternoon for the visitors.

Selby Town's relegation spot was confirmed as the basement side went down 4-0 at Armthorpe Welfare, meaning they can no longer get out of the bottom two.

Craig Wilkinson gave the hosts a half-time lead before Tom Hyde, Craig Morley and Henry Sibenge heaped more misery on the Robins after the interval.

The other side currently occupying the relegation zone places, Maltby Main, drew 1-1 at Liversedge, getting a point through Michael Jones' late strike after Jake Lawler had put the home side ahead on 21 minutes.

Arnold Town were 2-0 winners at home to Barton Town Old Boys whilst Lincoln Moorlands Railway beat hosts Long Eaton United, 2-1, to ease their relegation worries.

In Division One, leaders Handsworth took advantage of being the only top three side in action, winning 2-1 against visitors Worsbrough Bridge Athletic to extend their lead to six points.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half for the hosts through Luke Broadbent before Gareth Griffiths doubled their advantage on 71 minutes.

James Young pulled one back soon after but Handsworth held on to keep their title charge on track.

Pontefract Collieries and Glasshoughton Welfare both saw their promotion dreams tempered as they dropped points.

Pontefract went above their local rivals into fourth spot but could only draw 1-1 at home to sixth-paced Rossington Main.

Tom Robinson put the Colls ahead before the interval before Lewis Hilton restored parity on 54 minutes.

Glasshoughton went down 5-3 at Dinnington Town in a game that was level at 2-2 at half-time before two penalties converted by Liam Cartledge swung the encounter in the home side's favour.

Goals from Andrew Fieldhouse and Charlie Flaherty in the last quarter-of-an-hour moved Eccleshill United into the top seven with a 3-1 win over Appleby Frodingham who now know anything but victory in all of their last four games by large margins will mean they will finish bottom.

Teversal went behind in the second minute at Askern Villa but ended up winning 5-1 whilst Louth Town were 1-0 victors at Bottesford Town and Shirebrook Town beat hosts Yorkshire Amateur, 3-1.

And, the spoils were shared between Grimsby Borough and Hemsworth Miners Welfare as Josh Fuller struck in injury time to snatch the hosts a 2-2 draw.
