Baris NCEL Review - Season 2011/12 #1

8th August, 2011

The Baris Northern Counties East Football League season got underway at the weekend in high-scoring fashion with 58 goals netted in the seventeen matches that took place.

Pickering Town were the biggest winners as they won 4-1 at Selby Town, with all of their goals coming in the final half-hour at the Rigid Group Stadium.

Mike Thompson had put the Robins ahead just before half-time but Joel Ramm levelled on the hour mark and David Watson gave the Pikes the lead ten minutes later.

As the game went into injury time, the visitors secured the win, firstly with a Mark Triffit strike and then Watson's second of the afternoon.

The biggest crowd of the weekend was at the Neil Hudgell Law Stadium where Scarborough Athletic took on last year's runners-up Parkgate.

And, it was the away side who began the stronger with Nathan Swindells putting them ahead twice and giving them the lead by the interval.

But, the Seadogs restored parity on 74 minutes through Tony Hackworth and, helped by the sending off of Parkgate substitute Jordan Turner who had only been on the pitch for a quarter-of-an-hour, they finished the stronger with Hackworth grabbing a second and Joel Hartley netting in injury time for a 4-2 victory.

It was also the late, late show for Hall Road Rangers as they won by the same scoreline at home to Tadcaster Albion.

They were trailing to a Carl Stewart goal going into the last twenty minutes but Craig Suddaby, Neil Towler and Martin Thacker turned the game round in quick fashion.

Callum Ward pulled one back for the Brewers but Steve Graham converted the fourth in stoppage time to give them the two-goal win.

Mark Clare's last-gasp winner earned Maltby Main three points to start the season, winning 3-2 at home to Bridlington Town.

There were varying fortunes for the two sides who came up from Division One last season.

Ryan Damms gave Staveley Miners Welfare a 1-0 victory at Brighouse Town with his 42nd minute strike whilst Barton Town Old Boys were beaten 1-0 at Retford United, the Badgers returning to the NCEL with a win courtesy of Barry Payne's goal on 86 minutes.

Alex Hallam netted a brace for Liversedge in their 2-1 win at Nostell Miners Welfare whilst Thackley were 2-1 victors at Armthorpe Welfare and Winterton Rangers beat visitors Lincoln Moorlands Railway, 1-0.

Joe Wood grabbed a point for Arnold Town, his 86th minute equaliser making it a 1-1 draw at home to local rivals, Long Eaton United.

In Division One, Rossington Main had a start to remember as they put hosts Teversal to the sword, winning 5-0.

Jason Stokes and Jordan Hatton had them two-up by the interval before Lewis Hilton, Liam Charlton and Lee Holmes shared the goals around in the second period.

Pontefract Collieries also hit five at newly-relegated Dinnington Town with Greig McGrory scoring two after John Mellor had given the home side the lead in the opening minute.

Will Ramsey, James Hicks and Warren Radford also got on the scoresheet in the Colls' 5-1 victory.

There was also an opening defeat for the other relegated side, Hallam, as they went down 1-0 at Handsworth on Sunday afternoon.

Sam Smith got the goal on 48 minutes in front of 297, Division One's biggest crowd of the weekend.

Worksop Parramore will have been delighted with their first ever match in the Baris NCEL as they won 4-0 at home to AFC Emley.

They were three to the good by the 28th minute through Tom Mullen, Lee Thompson and Gavin Davis whilst Ryan Hindley got the fourth just before the hour.

The other new side, Albion Sports, had a rotten opening 47 minutes, finding themselves 3-0 down at Grimsby Borough with Andrew Taylor's brace doing most of the damage.

But, Alex Cusack and Micha Blur gave Sports hope going into the final quarter before Jordan Missin got the leveller on 78 minutes and it finished 3-3.

There were away wins for Shirebrook Town and Bottesford Town, Shirebrook winning 2-0 at Askern Villa courtesy of a second-half Carl Haslam double and Lee Bognar struck on 59 minutes for Bottesford in their 1-0 victory at Eccleshill United.

The match between Hemsworth Miners Welfare and Louth Town was called off an hour before kick-off when the referee, who had found glass on the pitch, deemed the playing surface unfit and he was concerned about the players' safety.

And, there was one friendly, Yorkshire Amateur going down 2-1 at home to Bay Athletic, Danny Forrest getting their goal early in the second half.

Every ball is keenly contested during Arnold Town's Baris NCEL Premier Division clash at home to local rivals, Long Eaton United.
