NCEL Match Review #71
1st May, 2009
Congratulations to Nostell Miners Welfare and Staveley Miners Welfare who both lifted silverware in a Cup Final filled midweek of action.
A last minute winner from Francis Johnson earned Nostell a 2-1 Presidents Cup Final Second Leg victory that saw them beat hosts Scarborough Athletic 3-2 on aggregate.
Dave Watts had put them ahead on four minutes before a quick equaliser from the Seadogs' Daniel Gray.
And, in the Second Leg of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy Final, hosts Staveley beat Pontefract Collieries by the same scoreline on the night and on aggregate to pick up the trophy for the second time.
Ryan Damms put them ahead on 40 minutes before Mark Lafferty levelled early in the second half.
But, a Lee Gregory penalty on the hour mark ensured the victory for the Inkersall Road side.
Selby Town claimed their place in next week's season climax, the League Cup Final, with a dramatic 4-3 win at Winterton Rangers.
The hosts had taken the lead on 22 minutes from Andy Holt and it stayed that way until the last eighteen minutes when the floodgates opened.
Ryan Paczkowski made it 2-0 before a Steve Lyon penalty pulled one back for Selby.
Leigh Wood and Dean Wilburn then gave the visitors a 3-2 advantage with six minutes remaining.
But, Paczkowski grabbed his second and Winterton's third to force extra time.
Tom Matthews grabbed the vital seventh goal of the evening on 109 minutes to send the Robins through to face Long Eaton United at Staveley on Bank Holiday Monday.
Two of our sides visited Football League grounds in their respective County Cup competitions and, despite good performances against UniBond League opposition, neither could bring home the trophy.
Bridlington Town took the lead at Hull City's ground against North Ferriby United in the East Riding Senior Cup Final on Monday.
But, David Cooke restored parity before the interval and, in the second half, Calum Russell and Russell Fry made it a 3-1 win for the Villagers.
And, Brodsworth Welfare went down 3-0 against Stocksbridge Park Steels in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Final.
Brett Lovell, a Jordon Shephard own goal and the third from Vill Powell secured the win at Sheffield Wednesday's ground.
Long Eaton missed out on a chance to go second in their penultimate KoolSport NCEL Premier Division match.
Joe Connor, Darren Clough and Chris Batchelor all scored in a 3-0 win for hosts, Pickering Town, who take the last available Presidents Cup spot for next season.
A brace each from Phil Jackman and Paul Wilson helped Hall Road Rangers to a 7-2 win at home to Armthorpe Welfare.
And, on Thursday, two days after lifting the Presidents Cup, Nostell got over the shock of conceding two early goals through Jamie Heard and Nathan Hotte to draw 2-2 at home to Bridlington Town.
Dave Nicholas and Danny Highley found the net for Alan Colquhoun's side.
