NCEL Match Review #70

26th April, 2009

Mickleover Sports have been crowned the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division champions.

They beat the only side that could catch them, Long Eaton United, at Station Road to begin their celebrations.

Long Eaton came into the game knowing that they had to win to prevent their hosts from lifting the title.

And, they looked to be on their way when they took the lead on 27 minutes through Kevin Mabon.

But, Karl Ashton levelled soon after and, when Kieran O'Connell put Mickleover ahead on 75 minutes it looked like the trophy chase was over.

Mabon, however, grabbed his and Long Eaton's second with three minutes remaining.

Knowing it was not enough, the visitors piled forward searching for the victory but were caught out twice as Tony Law and Liam Sowter made it 4-2 and secured Mickleover's promotion into the UniBond League.

Selby Town ended their campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Arnold Town.

The win has given the Eagles a good chance of finishing in the top five whilst Selby must now wait to see if Long Eaton overtake them in second.

Martin Carruthers and Chris Freestone got the goals for the home side, sandwiching Tom Matthews' strike for Selby.

Bridlington Town stay fourth after their 0-0 draw at home to Armthorpe Welfare, with the away side spurning a penalty late on.

Thackley, Dinnington Town and Winterton Rangers all secured themselves top eight finishes with fine wins on their travels.

Thackley claimed the biggest away victory of the season as they thumped bottom side Eccleshill United, 9-0, a result that takes the home team's negative goal difference into three figures.

Dinnington edged a much closer game at Mill Lane as they beat Pickering Town 3-2.

Michael MacNaughton had put the Pikes ahead on 41 minutes before there was a flurry of goals towards the start of the second-half.

Louis Axcell levelled for Dinnington and then Danny Brunton restored Pickering's lead.

Sam Dixey then struck twice to claim the victory for the visitors.
Winterton Rangers were 6-0 winners at Liversedge with Andy Holt and Callum Render grabbing a brace each whilst a Stuart King strike and a Nathan Would penalty completed a comfortable afternoon.

Brodsworth Welfare end the season in nineteenth after a 1-1 draw at home to Nostell Miners Welfare - Scott Bibby had them ahead by the break but they were denied by a last minute equaliser from Neil Samardizj.

The two sides above Brodsworth had varying fortunes.

Tom Parker and Ben Garrick helped Lincoln Moorlands Railway to a 2-1 victory at Maltby Main whilst Shirebrook Town went down to a sixth minute penalty by Kieran Gallagher at Parkgate.

The last round of matches in Division One began on Friday night with a 4-0 victory for Leeds Carnegie at bottom side Glasshoughton Welfare.

Three of the goals came in the last ten minutes from Luke Wildman, Simon Collins and Matt Chilton after Scott Lawson had given the visitors the lead on the half-hour.

Champions Scarborough Athletic made sure they won the title by a massive fourteen points with a 2-0 victory at Appleby Frodingham.

Daniel Gray and Craig Hogg scored late on to notch up their fifteen victory on their travels.

Second-placed Rainworth Miners Welfare won 4-1 at home to local rivals Teversal to stay unbeaten at the Welfare Ground all season.

Dean Short put Teversal ahead on 56 minutes but Richard Smith, Ant Lynam, Danny Naylor and Julian McDonald turned the game round.

An own goal and an early Mark Vickerage strike saw third-placed Askern Villa win 2-0 at home to Yorkshire Amateur.

A Lee Gregory double helped fourth-placed Staveley Miners Welfare to a 4-3 win at Brighouse Town whilst Barton Town Old Boys ensured the top five were all victorious with a last-gasp 2-1 win at home to Pontefract Collieries.

Lee Holmes and Matthew Lodge both grabbed hat-tricks as Rossington Main won 6-0 at Tadcaster Albion, Grimsby Borough won 4-0 at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic and Bottesford Town were 2-0 winners at Hemsworth Miners Welfare.
