NCEL Match Review #61

26th March, 2009

Scarborough Athletic have been crowned KoolSport NCEL Division One champions after their victory in midweek.

They beat Brighouse Town 3-0 in front of 533 fans at Queensgate to make it impossible for the chasing pack to catch them.

Rob Ellis settled any nerves with the opener after just 45 seconds before Daniel Gray added the second on the half-hour and David Hartas made certain of the landmark victory on 58 minutes.

They were given the opportunity to take the title with four games remaining after second placed Askern Villa slipped up on Monday night at Leeds Carnegie.

Michael Evans had put them ahead on 38 minutes but Chris Thackray scored an equaliser for Carnegie in the last quarter-of-an-hour and it finished 1-1.

Barton Town Old Boys and Staveley Miners Welfare kept alive their slight hopes of joining Scarborough in the Premier Division with victories.

Barton won 3-1 at home to Rossington Main thanks to a brace from Craig Burdick and a third from Craig Suddaby, all in the first half.

Suddaby turned the ball into his own net as the game entered injury time to give Main a late consolation.

And, Staveley won 4-0 at Bottesford Town in an encounter that was closer than the scoreline would suggest with three of the goals scored in the last quarter-of-an-hour.

Lee Gregory had put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute and that's how it stayed until the 75th minute when, under advice from one of his assistants, the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

The spot-kick was saved by the keeper but Spencer Goff pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0.

Gregory then grabbed his second before Danny Eborall completed the scoring in injury time.

Kyle Collins snatched a point for Yorkshire Amateur at Tadcaster Albion as his 84th-minute leveller ensured the game finished 2-2.

Damion Liddle and James Page found the net for Hemsworth Miners Welfare in their 2-0 victory at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

And, bottom side Glasshoughton Welfare lost 2-1 at Appleby Frodingham.

In the Premier Division, Shirebrook Town have moved six points clear of the bottom two after a 3-2 home victory over fellow strugglers, Brodsworth Welfare.

Welfare had twice come from behind, Scott Bibby cancelling out Simon Johnson's opener and then Liam Wilkin struck after Joe Naylor had given Shirebrook a half-time lead.

But, Naylor popped up with his second and the home side's winner with eight minutes remaining.

Eccleshill United remain next-to-bottom after they were beaten 2-0 at home by Bridlington Town, Nathan Hotte and Ben Knapper with the goals for the Seasiders.

Brid stay in third and two points clear of Long Eaton United who won 1-0 at Winterton Rangers, Kevin Mabon with their goal on 55 minutes.

Hall Road Rangers ended a ten-match losing streak in the League with a 2-1 victory at home to Dinnington Town, Paul Morrill and Steve Graham scoring in the first half before Grant Allott halved the deficit after the interval.

Pickering Town are through to the Fourth Round of the League Cup after winning 3-0 at Rainworth Miners Welfare.

Liam Salt and Chris Batchelor had them two-up by the break before Salt concluded the scoring with his second on 52 minutes.

The Pikes now go to Winterton in the last eight.

And, Selby Town are the first side through to the Semi-Finals with a 4-1 win at home to Hallam.

Sean Gorman, Tom Matthews and Steve Lyon put the game beyond doubt in the opening forty minutes.

Joe Bedford pulled one back for the visitors around the hour mark but the three-goal cushion was restored with ten minutes remaining, courtesy of Dean Wilburn.

There was a dramatic game in the Second Round of the Presidents Cup as Nostell Miners Welfare edged out a seven-goal thriller at Liversedge.

The hosts took a two-goal lead through Jermaine Moyce and Adam Clayton by the 33rd minute before Darren Rushton brought Nostell back into it six minutes later.

Marcus Walmsley made it 3-1 soon after the interval but then the game turned completely on its head as Craig Stephens struck a 26-minute hat-trick, one a penalty, to give the visitors a trip to Hallam in the Semi-Finals.

And, Arnold Town have set a date at UniBond Division One South leaders Retford United in the Semi-Finals of the Notts Senior Cup.

They won 2-1 at Gedling Town with Chris Freestone and Dennis Simms getting the goals for the Eagles.
