NCEL Match Review #60

22nd March, 2009

Scarborough Athletic have been promoted to the Premier Division after a 2-1 win at Teversal.

They had to come from behind after Gary Atkins had given the Carnarvon Street side an eighth minute lead.

But, Rob Ellis struck twice in an eight minute period halfway through the second period to secure their move into the top flight with five matches to play.

And, they could lift the Division One title on Tuesday night if they do better at home to Brighouse Town than second-placed Askern Villa do at Leeds Carnegie on Monday.

The battle to join Scarborough in the Premier Division looks now to be between Villa, who did not play on Saturday, and Rainworth Miners Welfare who closed the gap on Askern to seven points with a 3-0 home win over Bottesford Town.

Phil Bignall opened the scoring from the penalty spot early on and Craig Charlesworth added a second just before the interval.

Ant Lynam struck midway in the second half to ensure the victory that gives the Wrens a ten point cushion ahead of the sides below them.

As the fight for promotion hots up, so does the clamber for Premier Division survival with two of the four sides in danger of falling through the trapdoor winning.

Shirebrook Town climb to seventeenth after a 5-1 mauling of fellow strugglers, Eccleshill United.

The hosts had gone behind to a seventeenth minute strike from Ryan Wood but it was a complete turnaround in the second half as Simon Johnson struck a priceless hat-trick whilst Joe Naylor and Callum Wilkinson completed the victory.

Bottom side Lincoln Moorlands Railway won 2-0 at home to Nostell Miners Welfare to close the gap with Eccleshill to two points, Scott Coupland and Ben Garrick with the goals in the first half.

At the top of the Premier Division, leaders Mickleover Sports and second-placed Selby Town both won as the title chase becomes more of a two-horse race.

Sports stay nine points clear after a 5-0 thrashing of hosts Hall Road Rangers.

They led through a Dave Middleditch goal by the break before Karl Ashton, a Mike Gibson own goal and then strikes from Tony Law and Ricky Law made it a very comfortable afternoon.

But, with two games in hand,Selby will feel that they still have a chance of snatching the championship after their 3-0 home victory over Long Eaton United, a scoreline that severely dented the visitors' own title hopes.

Sean Gorman struck twice whilst Chris Kamara added Selby's third on the hour.

Bridlington Town move above Long Eaton into third with a 4-0 win at home to Parkgate as Ashley Dexter, Craig Palmer, Damian Fearn and Chibuzor Chilaka all struck in the last 34 minutes.

That makes it four straight wins for the Seasiders without conceding a goal as they try for a late charge to the title - whether they have left it too late, only time will tell.

Arnold Town climb to fifth after a goalless draw at Winterton Rangers, a match that was marred by a suspected broken ankle for Jonathan Plant.

If that proves to be the case, he will be the fifth player to have suffered a break this season whilst playing for Winterton.

Luke Sherman's winner eighteen minutes from time earned Liversedge a 2-1 home win against Pickering Town, who drop to sixth.

Armthorpe Welfare picked up a 1-0 home victory against Maltby Main courtesy of a 43rd-minute Bruno Holden strike.

And, Thackley and Hallam drew 1-1 at Dennyfield.

Meanwhile, back in Division One, despite being in the top six, Pontefract Collieries, AFC Emley and Barton Town Old Boys all saw their promotion hopes virtually disappear as they all failed to taste victory on their travels.

Barton Town fared best with a 2-2 draw at Rossington Main but they had to come from two goals down to secure a point.

Jason Stokes and Matthew Lodge had Main seemingly in control by the 32nd minute but Craig Burdick grabbed a brace, one in each half, to share the spoils.

AFC Emley lost 3-2 at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic with the hosts snatching the points thanks to an injury-time winner from Lee Garside.

Pontefract Collieries were beaten by the same scoreline at Yorkshire Amateur.

Staveley Miners Welfare climb to eighth after stretching their unbeaten run to fifteen games with a 4-0 win at home to Appleby Frodingham, all the goals coming in the second half.

And, bottom side Glasshoughton Welfare are still searching for their first win of the season as they lost 1-0 at home to Brighouse Town, Joe Pinnock with the goal on fourteen minutes.
