NCEL Match Review #33
30th November, 2008
Selby Town won the battle of the top two to cut Mickleover Sports' lead in the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division to five points.
They beat their hosts 4-3 in a scintillating game at Station Road with Marian Masny grabbing the winner with six minutes remaining.
Selby had taken a two-goal lead thanks to Bruno Holden and Sean Gorman in the opening 26 minutes.
Mickleover came back with strikes from Tony Law and Kieran O'Connell at the start of the second period but the visitors regained the lead on the hour through Masny.
Joe Carter levelled things again for the hosts before Masny's second of the afternoon sealed the points for the North Yorkshire side.
Third-placed Pickering Town also took the opportunity to close their gap to the leaders as they demolished Hall Road Rangers 5-0 with Liam Salt grabbing a hat-trick.
Luke Ibbetson and Lyle Hillier also got themselves on the scoresheet to keep the Pikes one point behind Selby.
Dean Whiley and Kevin Mabon scored before the half-hour in Long Eaton United's 2-0 win at Brodsworth Welfare.
It's a victory that moves them up to fourth ahead of Dinnington Town whose game at Parkgate was abandoned due to fog.
There was still no joy at home for bottom side Eccleshill United whose 2-1 defeat at the hands of Nostell Miners Welfare means they are still to pick up a point on their own patch.
A Dean Walters strike nineteen minutes from time saw Thackley pick up a point at Bridlington Town who had taken the lead through the League's goalscorers, Chibuzor Chilaka at the end of the first half.
Maltby Main climb to eleventh after a 4-2 win at home to Shirebrook Town who stay in eighteenth.
Matt Wragg and Gary Hibbert had them two-up by the break before Chris Wood added a third on 51 minutes.
Simon Johnson pulled one back for Shirebrook but the three-goal cushion was put back in place by Wragg's second of the match.
Nat Watson scored from the penalty spot for the visitors but they couldn't get back into the game.
The remaining two games ended all square with Hallam and Winterton Rangers drawing 1-1 at Sandygate whilst there were no goals for Liversedge and Armthorpe Welfare at the Clayborn Ground.
It is as-you-were with the top five of Division One but the gap between the teams has grown to six points.
Leaders Askern Villa remain ahead of Pontefract Collieries on goal difference after a 2-0 win at home to Teversal.
Curtis Walker grabbed both goals for the home side on 15 minutes and halfway through the second period.
Ponte were 4-0 winners at Appleby Frodingham, never looking back from a Ben Gilbert goal in the opening seconds.
Mark Lafferty struck twice, once from the penalty spot, whilst Gareth Lewins completed the scoring on a comfortable afternoon for the visitors.
But, performance of the day came from third-placed Scarborough Athletic who signalled their intentions with a 6-1 demolition of hosts and fellow promotion chasers, AFC Emley.
Graham Botham put the Seadogs ahead in the second minute before Ryan Blott doubled their lead and Lee Hill had brought the home side back into the game on the half-hour.
Daniel Gray made it 3-1 at the break and, after the interval, Scarborough scored twice from the penalty spot whilst Blott got his second to take full control.
Fourth-placed Barton Town Old Boys will be disappointed to have dropped points but they had to be thankful of a Gareth Barlow goal five minutes from time that got them a 2-2 draw at home to Yorkshire Amateur.
Craig Burdick had put Barton ahead early on before the Ammers turned the game on its head through Joe Barber and Dempsey Smith.
Rainworth Miners Welfare won 3-2 at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic to move up into sixth place whilst Tadcaster Albion climbed five places with their 2-0 home victory over Leeds Carnegie.
Brighouse Town's game with Rossington Main and Glasshoughton Welfare's clash with Bottesford Town were both abandoned due to fog.
