NCEL Match Review #20

16th October, 2008

Mickleover Sports have increased their lead at the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division to five points after Tuesday's 2-1 home win over Maltby Main.

It was a dramatic victory too as Sports snatched the win late on through a Liam Walsh goal just a minute after Rob Branagan had brought Main back level.

Earlier, Ricky Law had opened the scoring for the hosts on 17 minutes.

Sports have picked up 27 points in their opening ten games with Arnold Town and Pickering Town their closest rivals on 22.

In the Premier Division's only other midweek game, Selby Town climbed to twelfth with a 3-2 win at Armthorpe Welfare.

Henry Sibenge had put Welfare ahead on 28 minutes before Sean Gorman quickly levelled matters and then Christian Fox and Steve Lyon both struck in quick succession to give the Robins an unassailable lead going into the last ten minutes.

Richard Spears grabbed a late injury-time consolation for the home side who remain in fifteenth place.

Scarborough Athletic and Barton Town Old Boys have opened up a four point gap between themselves and the rest of Division One.

Scarborough are top on goal difference after a 7-0 thrashing of next-to-bottom Tadcaster Albion in front of a crowd of 442.

They led by a single goal going into the break thanks to Scott Phillips' fourth minute penalty.

But, they ran amok in the second period with David Hartas doubling the advantage soon after the interval, Ryan Blott made it 3-0 from the penalty spot.

Then, Gary Hepples, a Richard Medcalf double and a late strike from Joel Hartley completed to very comfortable evening for the Seadogs.

Barton stayed on their tails with an 88th minute winner in their match at home to Leeds Carnegie.

Gareth Barlow opened the scoring for Old Boys on the quarter-hour mark before Robert Devoy equalised seven minutes later.

Gary Dickinson restored their advantage only to see it quickly snuffed out again, this time by Scott Lawson.

And, the scores remained level until Barlow nabbed his second with time running out.

AFC Emley stay in sixth despite a 7-1 home over bottom side, Glasshoughton Welfare.

Lee Hill scored a hat-trick, with one from the penalty spot, whilst Sean Hazelden, Gavin Armitage, Sam Green and Steven Kenworthy all got on the scoresheet.

Michael Amos grabbed Welfare's only goal on a night that added misery to the currently managerless Leeds Road outfit.

Meanwhile, James Leech found the net and Phil Jackman scored a penalty in Bottesford Town's 2-0 win at Teversal.

Brighouse Town are the first side through to the last eight of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy as they beat visitors Grimsby Borough, 5-0.

Christopher Wdowczyk and Wayne Crossley had them two-up by the break before an own goal, a second from Crossley and a Lee Maturine strike eased them through.

And, there were varying fortunes for two of our sides in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup.

Nostell Miners Welfare are out after an injury-time winner by John Lloyd that saw visitors Kinsley Boys win 2-1.

But, Brodsworth Welfare, thanks to a Liam Wilkin brace and a third from Bryan Craig, progressed with a 3-0 victory at home to Mexborough Main Street.

And, despite a double from Dom Krief, Leeds Carnegie's BUCS League campaign got off to a disappointing start as they lost 6-2 at home to University of Lincoln.
