Referee Howard Webb MBE says he is thrilled to have become the new President of the Baris Northern Counties East Football League at the league's recent AGM in Scarborough. It is in recognition of a fantastic twelve months for the 39-year-old Rotherham match official who became the first referee to take charge of the Champions League Final and World Cup Final in the same year.
He began officiating in the NCEL back in 1993 before making the rise up the ladder to become the most respected referee in the world.
Vice-President Ronald Skidmore, who oversaw Webb's development in his early years as a referee, was the man who nominated him for President, an idea that was unanimously agreed by the League's Management Board.
And, Webb had no hesitation in agreeing to take on the prestigious role, saying: "The league played a huge part in my development and I have such fond memories of officiating at NCEL clubs around the region.
"The league was the springboard for my success in the football world. I am honoured that the League Management Board consider me worthy holding the position of President and I look forward to representing and promoting the League in a very positive way."
League Chairman David Morrall said it is an honour to have Webb on board: "I am delighted that Howard has accepted the League's invitation to become its President as to have someone on board of his stature speaks volumes for the competition.
"Like myself, Howard started his refereeing career on the Northern Counties East League and we are all proud of his achievements reaching the very pinnacle of world refereeing.
"The competition is delighted to welcome Howard as its President and is certain he will be an ambassador for the League of the highest order and I look forward to working with him to take it forward."
