Wilf Race, the manager of Premier Division side Maltby Main, has been banned for six months after verbally abusing a referee at a Sunday game, reports The Non-League Paper.

Race was given a 180-day ban by the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA and fined ?150 after the incident which led to Mexborough League champions Conyers' Sheffield Senior Cup game against Westville being abandoned.

It was alleged Race ran onto the pitch to confront referee Terry Whitehead after a goal was disallowed.

Race, who resigned from the Sunday club immediately afterwards, had been expecting a 112-day ban, but is angry because his evidence explaining his actions, along with an apology, was ignored by the disciplinary hearing, because he was unable to sign the documents while on holiday.

A County FA spokesman said: "The appropriate penalty is given to the offender if the case is found to be proved."

New assistant manager Kenny Geelan, a former Sheffield United player, will take charge of Maltby while Race is suspended.
