Sheffield Groundsman Wins Award

25th May, 2006

The FA's Groundsman of the Year is now in its fifth year and the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA are delighted to announce Pete Bowden of Sheffield FC as the winner for 2006.

The Award was set up to recognise the contribution of these unsung heroes of the grass roots game and encourage the development of groundmanship.

Pete not only looks after the pitch for Sheffield FC, officially recognised by FIFA as the world's oldest football club, but he also looks after the pitch for Hallam FC, the world's oldest football ground!

James Hope-Gill, Chief Executive of the County FA said: "This award is a fantastic opportunity for clubs and players to recognise the wonderful work done by many grounds staff across the area.

"Congratulations to Pete for winning the award. The work of the groundsmen often goes unrewarded. The award is won by nominations received from peers and colleagues, a terrific way to let the groundsman know his work and diligence doesn't go unnoticed."

The Coach & Horses ground is used by the senior team, the over 35's, the under 19's occasionally the disability squad, as well as the ladies team and of course is often used to host football festivals and campaign launches for Sheffield FC.

Pete certainly has his work cut out on a weekly basis, making sure the pitch is in the best possible condition for everyone to play the beautiful game on!

In addition to securing the County FA award, Pete was also runner up in the regional awards.

The County FA previous winners include Alan Jeeves from HSBC 2001 and 2004. Winning the National Award in 2001 and coming third in the Nationals this year.

Robert Gledhill from Penistone Church FC, Damon Wormald from Parkgate in Rotherham are also former winners of the award.
