Shiners Win Friendly Tournament

6th August, 2006

South Normanton Athletic have been celebrating their emphatic win over Premier Division side Shirebrook Town as they won their own invitation tournament for the first time.

Chairman Colin Price presented captain Nicolas Ghislenioni with the Jim England Trophy after their 3-1 victory last Wednesday.

He praised the management team of Glynn Stacy and Mark Harvey for building a team that he believes can compete at NCEL level.

He said: "This is the first piece of siverware for almost five long years and we think it is just the start.

"They have turned this club on its head and the future looks very bright after a struggle for the past four seasons. The time is ours to grasp."

The hosts played some exhiliarating football to go into a three-goal lead by half-time thanks to a brace from Ghisloni and one from Adam Needham.

But, the icing on the cake for the home fans was the performance of hometown boy Jarred Homes who is playing senior football for the first time.

Mr Price added: "It is amazing to think this lad has never played with the big boys, never mind at NCEL level.

"We and the management team are delighted that we have found one of the most natural talents on our own doorstep."

Praising Shirebrook Town on the way they played in the tournament, Price said: "They play great football and are a credit to their committee and supporters."
