NCEL Weekend Review
23rd April, 2007
The Premier Division title has still not been claimed as the two challengers for it both dropped points in another dramatic weekend in the NCEL.
Sheffield have moved back top after they drew at home to promotion hopefuls Selby Town.
Steve Davey put the visitors ahead on 20 minutes before Pete Davey levelled matters soon after and Vill Powell gave the hosts the lead just after the interval.
But, the Robins claimed a point with a 2-2 draw thanks to a second goal for Steve Davey sixteen minutes from time.
Retford United, meanwhile, were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at struggling Thackley.
A Dean Walters penalty on 59 minutes separated the sides moving the winners out of the bottom two of the table whilst making it three successive defeats for the Badgers.
But, the destiny of the title is fully in the North Nottinghamshire side?s hands as Sheffield have now completed their league programme.
Retford, with two games remaining, need a point and then avoid a fifteen-goal defeat to take the trophy.
Meanwhile, the quest for third place has also gone down to the wire.
Carlton Town are currently there after a 6-1 home thumping of Glapwell and that was after the visitors, whose hopes of UniBond football vanished with this result, had taken a third-minute lead through a Michael Martin own goal.
Steve Chaplin, Darryl Thomas, Martin Ball and Aidan Brady struck for the home side to make the game safe by half-time before Thomas added his second and Phil Bignall grabbed the sixth with two minutes remaining.
Carlton leapfrog Garforth Town, who were held to a 0-0 draw at Long Eaton, on goal difference.
And, Carlton and Garforth meet each other at the Genix Healthcare Stadium on Saturday with both sides knowing victory would secure them third spot.
A draw could be good enough for Carlton but that would leave the door open for Selby to overtake them should the Robins win all their last three matches.
At the bottom of the table, basement side Brodsworth Welfare were ahead twice at Sutton Town but were unable to claim their first victory in 36 games to complete their season.
A Mike Wibberley strike and a Stewart Ashford own goal in the opening 23 minutes had seemingly produced a shock as they went into the final quarter-of-an-hour 2-1 up.
But, Carl Westcarr and Matt Fisher spared the Snipes? blushes to keep them in eighth position with a 3-2 win.
Arnold Town moved up into fourteenth with a 5-0 thrashing of visitors Glasshoughton Welfare.
A brace from Chris Freestone plus goals from Fabian Smith, Andy Davies and Tom Watson secured the comfortable victory that sees Welfare drop to sixteenth.
Armthorpe Welfare concluded their season with a 2-0 win at Eccleshill United, Stuart Preston and Liam Muirhead with the goals that saw them climb to twelfth.
And the spoils were shared at Mill Lane where Pickering Town and Mickleover Sports played out a 2-2 draw.
Liam Salt grabbed a late equaliser for the Pikes after a Channon North goal on 44 minutes and a Michael MacNaughton own goal eighteen minutes from time had seemingly given Sports the maximum points.
In Division One, the battle for second place has gone down to the final weekend after both Winterton Rangers and South Normanton Athletic won.
Rangers know a point at home to Yorkshire Amateur on Saturday will be enough after their 5-0 home victory over Pontefract Collieries.
The highlight of the afternoon was a Rob Northen hat-trick and there were also goals for Andy Catton and Lee Mohammed.
Athletic won 1-0 over visitors Dinnington Town although they had to wait for a Ben Dearns own goal twelve minutes from time to secure the victory.
Champions Parkgate ended their hugely successful campaign with a 2-1 win at Nostell Miners Welfare.
Ryan Johnson grabbed the last-minute winner after a Danny Highley strike on 79 minutes had cancelled out the visitors? opener by Adam Fretwell.
It means that they will have won the title by at least eleven points and scored 120 goals in 32 matches, leaving nobody in any doubt that they fully deserved to take the trophy.
Nostell still hope to finish in fourth place but the gap was closed on them by Lincoln Moorlands who claimed a 2-0 win at bottom side Rossington Main, Dean Dye and Ryan Porter with the goals.
Staveley Miners Welfare moved up into sixth with a 3-1 win at Hall Road Rangers thanks, in part, to two goals from Thomas Nolan.
Teversal ensured that they finished out of the bottom two with a 3-2 win at Gedling Town as Richie Walker, Craig Hall and Jamie Hudson found the net for them.
And, Borrowash Victoria?s excellent run of form that has seen them move up to eleventh continued with a 2-0 home win over Tadcaster Albion.
Goals from Tommy Leighton and Kieran Saxton made it just one defeat in fourteen for Mark Wilson?s team since the turn of the year.
