NCEL Weekend Review
19th March, 2007
The pendulum has swung back towards Sheffield in the Premier Division title race after the weekend's action.
They picked up all three points at Liversedge whilst their closest rivals Retford United fell to a home defeat at the hands of Selby Town.
It means the gap is now once again eight points but Retford still have three matches in hand.
Sheffield's victory came courtesy of Craig Marsh's 59th-minute strike, the only goal of the game at the Clayborn Ground.
Meanwhile, Retford found themselves two goals down within the opening 25 minutes of their encounter as Steve Davey and Tom Adams put Selby in a clear lead.
Mark Ashton pulled one back with fifteen minutes from time but the Robins held out to claim the win that moved them up into fifth.
Garforth Town missed out on a chance to go above Retford in second as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Sutton Town.
Carlton Town, meanwhile, kept themselves in with a distant shout of the top two with a 3-0 win at Armthorpe Welfare as a Phil Bignall hat-trick kept them in fourth.
Second-half goals from Ian Brown and David Rimington without reply saw Glapwell victorious over Arnold Town at Hall Corner to climb to sixth in the table.
Hallam moved back into the top ten of the table with a 5-1 home win over Eccleshill United.
Andrew Wood, Lee Winfindale, Billy Rowley, Gavin Hunter and Christopher Coy got the Sandygate side's season back on track.
In the battle of the bottom two sides, Shirebrook Town came out of the game easy winners at home to Brodsworth Welfare.
Valadmir Santos Farrell and Lee Naughton had the hosts two-up by the break before there was a brief fightback as Craig Longley netted for Welfare.
But, Farrell added his second and Ady Francis also find the net to claim a 4-1 victory.
Shirebrook move up into eighteenth following that win whilst Brodsworth are now truly adrift at the bottom nine points behind Thackley who lost 2-1 at Glasshoughton Welfare.
Glasshoughton picked up the points thanks to a brace from Stuart Dove although Sean Clifford did get a consolation for Thackley on the hour mark.
And, Pickering Town shared the points with visitors Long Eaton United as they played out a 1-1 draw and both remain thirteenth and fourteenth in the table, respectively.
Meanwhile, there are new leaders of Division One for the first time in a long time.
Winterton Rangers are now at the summit after a 1-0 home win over Lincoln Moorlands, Andy Catton with the strike of 49 minutes.
They are top as Parkgate were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Worsbrough Bridge as Richard Elson grabbed a late equaliser for the visitors after Brian Cusworth had put the hosts ahead on 12 minutes.
South Normanton Athletic stayed third ahead of Nostell Miners Welfare on goal difference after a 5-2 win at Pontefract Collieries.
A second-half hat-trick from Kevin Mabon was the deciding factor after the game was level at 2-2 at the interval.
Nostell, meanwhile, are fourth as Michael Long's goal on 75 minutes saw them claim a single-goal victory at Dinnington Town.
Struggling Yorkshire Amateur picked up three vital points at home to Gedling Town, leaving them now nine points ahead of bottom side Rossington Main who did not play.
But, they are still sixteenth on goal difference despite Teversal's 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Hall Road Rangers, Rob Petch and Richard Tracey with Rangers' goals that move them up into eleventh.
Finally, Tadcaster Albion are now in the top six after a 4-1 win at home to Staveley Miners Welfare.
