NCEL Midweek Review

16th March, 2007

The race for the Premier Division and Division One titles has got a lot closer after the midweek action.

Retford United are now just five points behind Sheffield with three games in hand after beating the leaders 4-1 at the Bright Finance Stadium on Tuesday.

In what was a surprisingly one-sided encounter, Ben Chambers, Mick Godber and Lee Holmes had put the Badgers three-up by half-time before Neil Harvey added the fourth after the interval.

Ian Robinson grabbed a late consolation for the home side in front of a crowd of 390.

Garforth Town, who are third, could still have a say in the title race as their impressive run of form continues.

Two late goals from Greg Kelly saw them beat visitors Mickleover Sports, 2-1, after Dave Middleditch had put the Derby side ahead.

Simon Clifford?s side are now unbeaten in ten league matches.

Carlton Town move up to fourth following a 4-0 win at home to Liversedge, thanks to goals from Dean Gent, Danny Cane, Anthony Howell and Chris Atkins.

Selby Town are now sixth after Graham Whitehead, Adam Russell and Andrew Dawson saw them claim a comfortable 3-0 victory over visitors Eccleshill United.

They go above Glapwell who were held to a goalless draw at home to Glasshoughton Welfare.

A nineteenth-minute strike from Matt Fisher saw Sutton Town climb into the top ten with a single-goal win at home to Long Eaton United.

And, a Fabian Smith brace, the second deep in injury time, resulted in a 2-1 victory for Arnold Town against Hallam.

In Division One, Winterton Rangers cut the gap between themselves and top side Parkgate to just one point with a 2-0 win at Nostell Miners Welfare.

David Ricardo and Greg Archer got the first-half goals as they made the title chase a certain two-horse race.

Rangers are sixteen points clear of Nostell Miners Welfare who are fourth and South Normanton Athletic who replaced them in third.

Athletic went goal crazy against struggling Yorkshire Amateur as a Nick Thorpe hat-trick plus one each for Adam Newton, Matt Baxter, Jerod Holmes, Chris Murdock and Dean Whiley saw them win 8-0, the biggest win in Division One this season.

Worsbrough Bridge are now in the top six after a 4-1 win at fifth-placed Lincoln Moorlands.

Richard Elson and Peter Hirst gave them a two-goal advantage by half-time before Lee Garside added a third fifteen minutes from time.

Rob Lund pulled one back late on but there was still time for Alex Gillespie to grab the fourth.

Hall Road Rangers climbed out of the bottom four with a single-goal victory at home to Pontefract Collieries, Paul Farley with the strike on 75 minutes.

Teversal had to wait until injury time before Lee Rhodes? goal gave them a 1-0 win at basement side Rossington Main.

And, a Daniel Cox equaliser ten minutes from time saw Borrowash Victoria claim a 1-1 draw at home to Dinnington Town after Kieran Gallagher had put the visitors in the lead.

Meanwhile, it is slight advantage Parkgate in the Wilkinson Sword Trophy Final as they edged a dramatic first leg tie at Staveley Miners Welfare.

Ben Kistell had put Staveley ahead on 12 minutes before a Marc Scott own goal and Ryan Johnson gave Parkgate the lead by the interval.

Robert Cam equalised on 47 minutes before a Brian Cusworth brace put the visitors in control.

But, a Liam O?Brien strike on 79 halved the deficit for Staveley and the game finished 4-3 to the Division One leaders to set up what should be a dramatic second leg on the 27th of March.

Finally, Sutton Town are into the semi-finals of the Notts Senior Cup as they made it two wins in three days on Thursday night.

Craig Mitchell and Matt Fisher gave them a perfect start at home to Central Midlands side Radford before Keith Henstock pulled the visitors back into the game on 20 minutes.

And, that is the way it stayed until Jason Blunt grabbed a third for a 3-1 victory with two minutes remaining.
