NCEL Midweek Review
10th November, 2006
Winterton Rangers moved to the top of Division One in spectacular style in midweek with a 7-0 home thrashing of Borrowash Victoria.
And, there were seven different scorers for Peter Daniel's West Street side on Wednesday.
Danny Clarke and David Ricardo gave them a two-goal advantage by half-time before Andy Holt and Steve Underwood doubled that lead by the 66th minute.
And, there were goals from Rob Northen, Mark Whitehouse and Callum Dransfield in the last ten minutes to complete the rout.
It means Rangers go one point ahead of former leaders Parkgate with a game in hand whilst Borrowash remain fourteenth.
There were three games, meanwhile, in the Premier Division and all of them finished 2-1.
Retford United have moved up to fourth after a victory at Garforth Town.
They went ahead through Peter Duffield's 21st minute penalty but Shane Kelsey levelled matters before half-time.
Ben Chambers then grabbed the winner for the North Nottinghamshire side with four minutes remaining.
Garforth drop to fourteenth after victories for Long Eaton United and Mickleover Sports moved them above Simon Clifford's side.
Goals from Aidan Brady and Mark Strzyzweski gave Long Eaton the points at Carlton after Joe Irons had put the home side ahead.
And two from Channon North saw Sports victorious at home to Liversedge.
It was the Second Round of the Sheffield & Hallam Senior Cup and it was poor midweek for the NCEL with only three of the nine sides from the league going through.
Most disappointing was Worsbrough Bridge's 3-2 defeat at home to Mexborough Main Street whilst Nostell Miners Welfare went down 2-1 at Penistone Church.
AFC Emley lost by a single goal at home to Frickley Athletic whilst Rossington Main were beaten 2-0 at Stocksbridge Park Steels.
And, despite a brave late comeback with two goals in the last ten minutes, Brodsworth Welfare lost 3-2 at Conference North side Worksop Town.
In the all-NCEL clash, it was a cracking encounter at Sandygate as Hallam defeated local rivals Sheffield 4-3.
Chris Dolby had put Sheffield ahead after just four minutes but the visitors found themselves 3-1 down by the break as Gavin Hunter and two from James Tevendale put the hosts in command.
Chris White pulled one back for Dave McCarthy's side on 53 minutes but the two goal cushion was restored soon after by Scott Bates.
Darryl Winter gave Sheffield a glimmer of hope with nine minutes remaining but Hallam hung on and stopped their opponents from claiming a third successive County Cup title.
Dinnington Town were the most comfortable winners as a Liam Cartledge hat-trick saw them beat Frecheville CA 3-0.
And Parkgate beat Harworth Colliery Institute 3-2, thanks to goals from Adam Fretwell and a Caine Cheetham brace.
Danny Rhodes scored twice in the last three minutes for Harworth to give Parkgate something to worry about but it was too little, too late for the Central Midlands side.
Meanwhile, it was not a good Tuesday night for Glasshoughton Welfare in the First Round of the West Riding County Cup.
They went down 3-0 at home to Unibond League side Ossett Albion.
