NCEL Weekend Review
30th October, 2006
Maltby Main's lead at the top of the Premier Division has grown to three points after a home win over Mickleover Sports at the weekend.
Two first-half goals from Scott Somerville put the Muglet Lane side on their way before Mark Blount gave Mickleover some hope at the start of the second period.
And, it remained a tight affair until Luke Fletcher's injury-time strike regained Main's two-goal cushion as they won 3-1.
They stretched the gap at the top as the side that started the day in second, Selby Town, had their home tie with Retford United postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
Also taking advantage of that cancellation were Sheffield and Pickering Town, both of whom picked up single-goal victories to go second and third, respectively.
Fellow high-flyers Liversedge were the defeated side at the Coach and Horses Ground as Vill Powell grabbed Sheffield's winner in the 81st minute.
That made it eight games unbeaten in a row for Dave McCarthy's men whilst Sedge fell to fifth in the table.
Gavin Dickenson was the hero for Pickering with his 63rd minute goal at Long Eaton United who drop to fifteenth after that defeat.
Eccleshill United move up to sixth following a 3-1 win over Hallam, Scott Broughton with a brace for the home side and James Hanson with the third before a late consolation for Gareth Clayton.
Just behind them in seventh are the team with the best points to games ratio, Sutton Town, who also won 3-1 on their own patch.
Phil Massingham put the Snipes ahead on 37 minutes against Garforth Town before a Shane Kelsey penalty levelled matters after the interval.
Simon Dakin and James Whitehead claimed the points for the hosts in the last quarter-of-an-hour and that means that Lee Wilson's side have picked up nineteen points from their nine games so far.
Another 3-1 home winner was Thackley who had to wait eleven games for their first victory and now have had two in a row.
Sean Clifford, Andy Howland and Lee Reilly earned them the three points against Glasshoughton Welfare.
They climb to eighteenth, just behind Welfare whose goal was scored by Julien Wilkes from the penalty spot.
Shirebrook Town remain bottom after being easily beaten 4-0 at home by local rivals Glapwell.
Mark Sherlock and Chris Rhodes gave the visitors a half-time lead before Ian Streather and Adam Moran made certain of the points for the Hall Corner side who are now ninth.
For Shirebrook, however, the table will make depressing reading as they are now four points behind the team above them, Brodsworth Welfare, although they do have two games in hand.
Broddy's miserable form continued with a 2-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers Armthorpe Welfare, making it twelve games without a win.
Carlton Town moved up to fourteenth with a 3-0 win at home to Arnold Town.
Meanwhile, in Division One, Parkgate took the honours in the battle of the top two sides.
It was a comfortable 4-0 victory over Nostell Miners Welfare, thanks to goals from Bob Moorwood, two from Matt Outram and a late strike by Ryan Johnson.
Winterton Rangers move above Nostell into second after a 2-1 win at home to Hall Road Rangers.
However, they had to wait until the 89th minute and a Danny Clarke goal before they could celebrate the three points.
The top of the table remains congested with just four points separating the top six sides.
Behind Nostell in fourth are Worsbrough Bridge who did not play, then Gedling Town who earned a point in a goalless draw at Rossington Main, and Tadcaster Albion replace Lincoln Moorlands in sixth after beating them 2-1 at home.
South Normanton Athletic were the only away winners in Division One as a flying start set them on their way to a 3-0 win at local rivals Teversal.
A Joe Atkinson penalty and a James Parkinson goal saw them two up within the opening eight minutes and Adam Newton grabbed the third midway through the second period.
Athletic stay in tenth whilst Teversal drop to thirteenth.
And, there were late goals in Pontefract Collieries 2-1 win over Borrowash Victoria.
The Vics looked like they were going to claim only their second victory of the season after a John Guy penalty put them ahead after 74 minutes.
But, Ponte sub Kevin Duckworth scored twice in the last ten minutes to turn the game on its head and keep the home side ninth in the table.
