NCEL Saturday Review
15th October, 2006
Two Scott Somerville goals helped to extend Maltby Main's lead at the top of the Premier Division to three points.
He also set up a last minute third for Tommy Fletcher in the 3-0 victory at Long Eaton United and goes joint top of the goalscoring charts with seven for the season.
Pickering Town moved into second with a single-goal win at bottom side Thackley, Ricky Greening with the strike on the half-hour mark.
They replace Sheffield who drop to third after a 1-1 draw at home to local rivals Hallam in front of the biggest crowd of the season by far.
575 crammed into the Coach and Horses ground to see the hosts go ahead on 68 minutes through Vill Powell.
Jason Tee grabbed an equaliser with three minutes remaining to earn the visitors a point.
Retford United also had their record attendance of the campaign so far as they climbed to fourth with a 3-1 home win over Armthorpe Welfare.
But, it was the visitors who shocked the majority of the 234 crowd as they took the lead through Gary Jones in the opening seconds.
Peter Duffield equalised on 14 minutes before Mick Godber gave the Badgers a half-time lead and Ben Chambers made sure with a late third.
And, Selby Town are now fifth after a 3-1 home win over Garforth Town.
Three of the four goals came from the penalty spot, two from Selby's Andy Hart whilst Garforth's consolation was taken by Ian Twitchen.
It was a bad afternoon, meanwhile, for the Premier Division's bottom three sides as they all lost at home.
Nineteenth-placed Shirebrook Town went down 3-0 to Glasshoughton Welfare who moved up four places to thirteenth with their victory.
Alex Higgins proved unlucky for the Langwith Road side with the opener after thirteen minutes.
Then, second half goals from Richard Wheelhouse and Stuart Dove condemned Shirebrook to their eighth defeat of the season.
They remain four points behind the side just above them, Brodsworth Welfare, who lost to a single goal at home to a quickly-improving Glapwell.
Mark Sherlock grabbed the only goal of the game in the opening minute of the second half to move Les McJannet's side up to ninth in the table.
Glapwell have now conceded only one goal in their last four games.
A brace from Richard Marshall helped Liversedge to a 3-1 win at Sutton Town to climb up to sixth.
The visitors scored all their goals in an eight-minute spell just after the interval, Phil Bignall got a late consolation for The Fieldings outfit.
And, a last-minute winner from Tom Watson snatched all three points for Arnold Town with a 3-2 victory at Eccleshill United.
The top of the Division One table is incredibly tight with only one point separating the top five sides.
Worsbrough Bridge are the new leaders after a 2-1 win over visitors Nostell Miners Welfare, thanks to two goals from Lee Garside, one from the penalty spot.
Nostell, whose sole strike came from Paul Bedford, missed out on the chance to go top themselves and drop to fourth.
Worsbrough take over at the helm from Parkgate who were beaten at home in a seven-goal thriller by Lincoln Moorlands.
The hosts were two goals up by the half-hour mark through Bob Moorwood and Brian Cusworth but Nick Mason pulled one back before the break.
And the points looked to be Parkgate's when Cusworth grabbed his fourteenth of the season on 50 minutes to make it 3-1.
But, Moorlands produced an outstanding comeback as Kev Ryan and Scott Coupland brought the game back level before John McPhail scored the winner with sixteen minutes remaining.
Moorlands climb to eighth with the victory.
Third are Winterton Rangers who were also embroiled in a 4-3 cliffhanger but they were on the winning end against visitors Rossington Main.
Rangers went in at the interval 2-1 up thanks to a 44th minute strike by Steve Underwood after Main's Robert Sanderson had cancelled out an early goal from Mark Whitehouse.
Andy Catton and Scott Phillips extended the host's lead to 4-1 within eight minutes of the restart.
Main threatened to snatch at least a point through Slawomir Cetnalowski and Paul Bradley, but Rangers managed to hold on.
Gedling Town are fifth after a 2-1 win at Teversal.
Chris Davis and Glyn Cotton were their scorers whilst Nick Thorpe found the net for the Tevie Boys, all in the first half.
Yorkshire Amateur remain bottom after John Forrest's 25th minute goal earned hosts Pontefract Collieries the three points.
The Ammers are one of three sides stuck at the foot of the table on four points.
Alongside them are AFC Emley who were beaten 5-1 at home to Staveley Miners Welfare in front of a crowd of 162, the day's third highest attendance in the NCEL.
Lee Maturine had put the hosts ahead in the opening minute before Anthony Shaw equalised seconds later.
Then, two from Robert Cam and one each for Wesley Pierce and Matthew Ellis claimed a comfortable win for Welfare.
And, at Phoenix Park, Dinnington Town were held to a 3-3 draw by Hall Road Rangers as Division One produced 35 goals in just eight matches.
Meanwhile, it was a good day in the Derbyshire Senior Cup with two NCEL sides winning at Central Midlands opposition.
Borrowash Victoria claimed a single-goal win at Pinxton whilst Mickleover Sports also progress to the Second Round after beating Bolsover Town 3-2.
