NCEL Saturday Match Review
1st October, 2006
The NCEL's participation in this year's FA Cup has come to an end.
The two remaining clubs in the competition were both knocked out on Saturday at the Second Qualifying Round stage.
Hallam were beaten 5-1 by Northern League side Durham City at Esh Winning FC's West Terrace ground.
The tie was virtually over by the half-hour mark as the Sandygate side found themselves 3-nil down, but Billy Rowley got them a late consolation to give them some cheer.
Two second half goals by Wayne Johnson and Nick Wood ended Gedling Town's run as they lost 2-nil at home to Midland Alliance outfit Rocester.
Meanwhile, Mickleover Sports grabbed the headlines in the Premier Division.
With Sutton Town out of action, Sports took over at the top of the table thanks to a single-goal victory at Long Eaton United.
Retford United are just behind them in second as an early goal from Peter Duffield saw off Glapwell at Cannon Park in front of a crowd of 212, the highest Premier Division attendance so far.
Sheffield moved up into fourth with a crushing 5-1 win over Arnold Town.
A hat-trick from new boy Vill Powell helped Dave McCarthy's side to an easy victory.
Just behind them on goal difference are Selby Town who left it very late to beat Liversedge 2-1 at the Flaxley Road Ground.
Sedge looked well on the way to victory thanks to a 20th minute goal from Craig Smith but Lee Dawson equalised on 89 minutes and then, five minutes into stoppage time, Steve Lyon grabbed a priceless victory.
At the other end of the table, Shirebrook Town lifted themselves off the bottom with their first win of the season.
A brace from Simon Johnson and a Duncan Bray penalty eased them to a 3-nil win over Pickering Town at Langwith Road.
Thackley are now the basement side after a 1-nil home defeat at the hands of Maltby Main.
Elsewhere, Garforth Town won 2-nil at Armthorpe Welfare, Eccleshill United were victorious by the same scoreline at home to Carlton Town and Glasshoughton Welfare were 4-2 winners at Brodsworth Welfare.
In Division One, Parkgate continued their amazing goalscoring start to the season with a 5-nil home win against South Normanton Athletic.
Brian Cusworth scored a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to twelve - and that's despite missing three games through suspension!
Parkgate have now struck thirty goals in just seven league matches.
Hanging on to their coat tails are NCEL newcomers Nostell Miners Welfare who also won 5-nil.
Their victims were Staveley Miners Welfare and Nostell also had a hat-trick hero, Craig Stephens.
But, neither he nor Cusworth were the most prolific striker of the day.
That accolade fell to Nick Thorpe who hit four as Teversal bagged the most goals in a 6-2 win at home to Rossington Main to move them up to twelfth.
Worsbrough Bridge were also high scorers with a 5-1 win over Yorkshire Amateur to go fourth and Hall Road Rangers won 3-2 at AFC Emley.
Dinnington Town and Borrowash Victoria played out the game with the lowest tally of goals, but they still had two, with a 1-all draw at Phoenix Park.
Meanwhile, Winterton Rangers were knocked out of the Lincs Senior A Cup with a 4-2 defeat at Deeping Rangers.
But, Lincoln Moorlands progressed with a 3-2 win at Humber Premier League outfit LSS Lucarlys.
