NCEL Boxing Day Review

26th December, 2006

Sheffield's gap at the top of the Premier Division has grown to ten points after a 3-1 win at rivals Hallam.

But, the visitors had to come behind to stop the third-placed hosts from stretching their unbeaten run to nine games.

Pete Davey had put into his own net to gift Hallam the lead on four minutes but Gary Townsend levelled before the half-hour mark.

And, the second period belonged to Sheffield as Chris Dolby scored on 60 minutes and Vill Powell added a penalty soon after.

The hosts then had Anthony Howell sent off to compound a miserable day for them as they dropped one place to fourth.

They were replaced in third by Mickleover Sports who won 2-1 at Sutton Town thanks to goals from Rob Spencer and Mark Blount.

The Snipes remain in eleventh despite that defeat.

Retford United, meanwhile, stay in second but lose a bit of ground on the leaders after being held to a goalless draw at Long Eaton United.

And, fifth-placed Maltby Main claimed a comfortable 3-0 home win over Liversedge with Russell Hobson grabbing a first-half brace before Ashley Longstaff added the third from the penalty spot with twelve minutes remaining.

Glapwell remain in sixth having been held by Shirebrook Town, the bottom side showing great resilience to get a late equaliser having been reduced to ten men.

Craig Gaunt headed Glapwell ahead after ten minutes but Shirebrook, who had Andy Jones sent off, claimed the point they deserved when Glapwell keeper Neil West fumbled Chris Rhodes' cross into his own net with three minutes remaining.

The point means Shirebrook cut the gap between them and the side just above them to two points after Brodsworth Welfare were beaten 3-0 at Armthorpe Welfare.

Eighteenth-placed Thackley were also beaten, 4-2 at home to Eccleshill United.

Dean Walters grabbed the host's goals but a Ben Hardy brace and one each from Darren Fletcher and Luke Hudson meant it was the visitors who left the happier as they move up to eighth.

Two penalties from Daniel Blair at both ends of their game at Arnold Town saw Carlton Town claim a 3-0 victory, Anthony Howell claimed the other goal.

And, Glasshoughton Welfare were 2-1 winners over Garforth Town but stay fifteenth.

The match between Selby Town and Pickering Town was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
