Northen Moves To Rivals

7th November, 2009

Barton Town Old Boys have signed striker Rob Northen from their local rivals, Winterton Rangers.

Northen was the star of the show when Winterton romped to the NCEL Premier Division League and Cup double in the 2007/08 campaign.

The striker plundered 42 goals in all competitions in that season to earn himself a move to Unibond Premier Division side North Ferriby.

That move did not work out for Northen though and he returned to Winterton, where things took a severe turn for the worse.

A badly broken leg ruled Northen out for the majority of last season, with Rangers finishing in mid-table.

The exit door swung regularly throughout the summer, with players and the management team leaving, but fans' favourite Northen was one of few who stayed, taking on the captaincy and a central role in the rebuilt team.

But now Northen has decided to leave and join Town after scoring just five goals in this season.

Barton chief-executive Paul Friskney, told the Scunthorpe Telegraph what a huge boost the transfer will be for the Swans.

"We are delighted to have had the opportunity to bring someone like Robbie Northen to join our club," a delighted Friskney said.

"Robbie came to our ground, looked at the facilities we have got and was very impressed with what we are developing.

"We have a massive catchment area for a club our size, three times the size of Winterton.

"And we have to make sure that we put on some entertainment for the local people and hopefully this signing will give potential fans some encouragement as well.

"We were not even sure if Robbie would want to talk to us though because there were other teams, namely Bridlington Town, tracking him as well.

"But now, along with Gaz Barlow, we will have two of the most prolific strikers that we have ever had at Barton.

"Hopefully we can now push on for promotion this year and get the same successes as Winterton and Brigg Town - that would be great for the local football community here."

Northen goes straight into the squad that faces Glasshoughton Welfare at the Euronics Ground this afternoon.
