Staveley Back Wrens Charity Push
16th October, 2009
Staveley Miners Welfare's chairman Terry Damms has thrown his weight behind a recent fundraiser.
Rainworth Miners Welfare played a Church Warsop Welfare XI for the Tony Nattriss Memorial Trophy, named after a Warsop man who tragically died in a road crash in the summer.
The match, liberally sprinkled with guest players, ended in a 3-3 draw and raised upwards of ?4,000 on the day for the Nottingham City Hospital renal unit.
Having read of the event, Mr Damms contacted Rainworth secretary Les Lee by email to contribute a further ?250 to the cause.
Mr Damms said: "We are pleased to confirm that the main sponsors of Staveley MWFC, Baris Group Ltd, have agreed to make a contribution.
"All too often non-league football is portrayed as an area where little is done to assist charities and where clubs and players are portrayed as being solely interested in raising money for themselves.
"Your club's and player's efforts last week in the charity match provides evidence that the non-league football scene does have people who wish to assist charities and your clubs and players efforts last weekend with the charity donation should be commended.
"As directors of Baris Group Ltd, based in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire (sponsors of Staveley) we are keen to support any local charity wherever we feel there is a justifiable and worthwhile cause and this is certainly one such cause."
Wrens boss Rudy Funk commented: "This is a wonderful gesture by the Staveley chairman, and shows the true spirit that is within non-League football.
"Week in, week out, we come up against clubs who are rivals on the field, but at times like this all that is put aside for the greater good, and we, Church Warsop and the Nattriss family will, I know, be extremely grateful for this gesture."
A cheque for the total amount raised is to be presented by members of the Nattriss family to representatives of the City Hospital at Church Warsop Welfare's Wood Lane ground on Saturday, prior to their Central Midlands League Cup tie with Sutton Town.
