NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #68
1st May, 2011
The chase for promotion to the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division will go down to the last Division One game that will be played on Monday.
Barton Town Old Boys won 2-1 at Eccleshill United, courtesy of an injury-time winner from Andy Jackson, which means they will take second place on the final day if they draw at win at home to Louth Town.
Currently, they are fourth, one place behind Handsworth who saw their promotion dreams end despite a 3-1 victory at Shirebrook Town.
They needed to overhaul a fifteen goal difference to go above second-placed Yorkshire Amateur and, when they scored twice in the first eight minutes through Alex Torr, some supporters may have thought the dream was on - but it was not to be.
Glasshoughton Welfare ensured they finished seventh with a 2-0 win at home to Bottesford Town, Josh Corbett with both the goals, one in each half.
They finish above AFC Emley, who beat Louth Town 5-2, on goal difference.
Emley won courtesy of a double each from Steve Kenworthy and Dean Wharam whilst Marc Townsend also got on the scoresheet.
A Mark Vickerage hat-trick helped Askern Villa to a 4-0 win over bottom side Brodsworth Welfare who have now gone over two years without a victory in the league.
Grimsby Borough won 3-0 at Hemsworth Miners Welfare, George Newby and Luke Fanthorpe with first half strikes before Freddie Cass got the third late on.
Rossington Main were 2-1 victors at Leeds Carnegie, the hosts' last game in the NCEL after they sadly tendered their resignation.
And, there was a touching moment at the end of the game when the Rossington team formed a guard of honour for the Carnegie players as they left the field for a final time.
With all issues resolved in the Premier Division, there was now just a jostling for final positions in the table.
The top three had already been decided so it was an uneventful end up there with Farsley AFC having already completed their schedule whilst Parkgate and Bridlington Town played out 1-1 draws.
Daniel Cardwell put Parkgate ahead at Maltby Main but they were pegged back by a Scott Whittington equaliser four minutes from time.
And, Bridlington left it even later to get a point from their home clash with Hall Road Rangers, Lee Wright snatching a last-gasp equaliser to cancel out Tom Chippendale's early strike.
Tadcaster Albion made sure of fourth spot in their first ever season in the top flight with a 3-0 home win over bottom side Dinnington Town.
Carl Stewart and Graeme Whitehead netted in the opening half before Marc Thompson made sure of the points just after the interval.
Winterton Rangers, who drew 0-0 at home to Scarborough Athletic, finished the season in fifth spot.
Lincoln Moorlands Railway moved up to sixth after a remarkable 7-4 victory at Brighouse Town.
They were 4-0 up by the break with Tom Garrick scoring twice and Danny Brooks and Joe Butler finding the net as well.
Lee Burgess and Nathan Cartman pulled two back for Brighouse as the game went into the last ten minutes whereupon the floodgates opened.
Nathan Adams struck twice in a minute to give Moorlands a 6-2 lead, Burgess and Cartman both got their second goals of the afternoon to get it back to 6-4 and then Luke Forbes concluded the scoring with two minutes to go.
Pickering Town are the only side who can deny Moorlands a top six finish as they play Long Eaton United on Monday in the division's final game.
The Pikes won 4-2 on Friday night against Thackley whilst Long Eaton were 2-0 victors at Nostell Miners Welfare on Saturday with goals from Kelvin Mushambi and Elliot King.
