NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #67
29th April, 2011
Congratulations to both Glasshoughton Welfare and Tadcaster Albion who both picked up silverware in midweek.
Glasshoughton won the Wilkinson Sword Trophy for the first time ever with a 2-0 victory over Rossington Main on Tuesday night.
The match at Barton Town Old Boys' Euronics Ground was, in truth, over after just fifteen minutes as goals from Andy Catton and Liam Radford put Welfare firmly in control and they never looked back.
And, Tadcaster, who last year won their first ever trophy when they picked up the Division One title, continued to taste success as they beat Farsley AFC, 5-1.
The game was played at Tadcaster after a coin toss determined the venue and it was the "home" side who were two-up by the break with goals from Carl Stewart and Stuart Rice.
Ryan Qualter made it three on 55 minutes before Ryan Serrant pulled one back for the Premier Division champions.
But, Graeme Whitehead and Terry Taylor made sure of the victory with strikes late on.
It ended Farsley's hopes of a historic treble but the double is still on as they are in the League Cup Final on Monday.
There was a massive game in the Premier Division as two sides clashed knowing that if the result did not go their way, they would end up in a relegation place.
Hosts Arnold had the easier task as they knew they had to avoid defeat to Hallam to ensure they stayed up.
Ritchie Holmes struck first for them on ten minutes but Matt Sykes restored parity quickly.
But, Tony Law put the result beyond doubt as his strike on the hour made it 2-1 to Arnold, meaning Hallam finish next-to-bottom.
Runners-up spot in the Premier Division was decided when third placed Bridlington Town fell to a 4-2 defeat at home to Thackley on Monday.
Matthew Mathers' double helped the visitors to a victory that moves them into the top six.
Bridlington's loss meant that Parkgate could not be caught in second and they celebrated by winning 1-0 at home to Hall Road Rangers on Tuesday, Daniel Cardwell with the only goal of the game.
Hall Road did have some cheer on Thursday night, though, as they beat visitors Scarborough Athletic 1-0 with Adam Walker netting towards the end of the first period.
The other Premier Division game saw Pickering Town win 2-1 at home to Long Eaton United, Dean Whiley's last gasp own goal giving them the three points.
Handsworth moved up into third spot in Division One as David Cockerill's late double helped them to a 3-1 win at home to Grimsby Borough.
With a game to play, they are three points behind second-placed Yorkshire Amateur who have finished their campaign.
But, they need to overhaul a fifteen goal difference and hope fourth-placed Barton Town Old Boys also slip up to have any chance of clinching the promotion spot.
Champions Staveley Miners Welfare ended their campaign on a winning note with a 4-1 home victory over Teversal whilst Hemsworth Miners Welfare drew 3-3 with visitors Pontefract Collieries.
