NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #63
15th April, 2011
Farsley AFC took a major step towards winning the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division trophy in midweek without even playing as both their title rivals dropped points on their travels.
Bridlington Town played out a goalless match at Long Eaton United whilst Parkgate drew 1-1 at Scarborough Athletic.
Chris Wood's 61st minute penalty earned them the point after Gary Hepples had put the Seadogs ahead.
It means that Farsley are now eleven points clear of Parkgate having played two games more whilst Bridlington are twelve points behind the leaders with three matches in hand.
And, Farsley will be crowned champions on Saturday if they win or draw at Tadcaster Albion and other matches go their way.
Next-to-bottom Hallam played two games in midweek as they battle to avoid the drop.
Things went well on Tuesday as a Martin Brissett brace helped them to a 2-0 win at home to Armthorpe Welfare.
But, they were beaten 2-1 on Thursday at Sandygate by Selby Town, Nathan Iley and Lee Pallender with the Robins goals whilst Matt Sykes scored in-between for the home side.
It means that Hallam are six points away from safety with four to play and are now level on games with the side they are chasing, Arnold Town.
The remaining Premier Division match played in midweek saw Hall Road Rangers and Maltby Main draw 2-2.
In Division One, Barton Town Old Boys kept their promotion challenge going with a 5-2 victory at Bottesford Town.
Braces from Simon Spencer and Gareth Barlow helped them to the vital win that moves them to within four points of second-placed Yorkshire Amateur with two games in hand.
Teversal remained in the bottom three after their 2-1 defeat at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
Winterton Rangers have booked their place in the Final of the League Cup after a dramatic 3-2 victory at home to Scarborough on Tuesday.
They came from two down with James O'Neill levelling in the 86th minute to force a further half-hour.
And, Liam Wilkin got the winner midway through the first period of extra time to book their place in the showpiece finale.
But, they will have to wait to see who they will face in that game.
Farsley AFC are through to the semi-finals after Ryan Watson's goal in the last minute of extra-time saw them progress by a single goal at Liversedge.
They now host Handsworth next week to see who will take on Winterton.
Extra-time was also needed for the two Wilkinson Sword Trophy Semi-Finals that were played.
A Lee Holmes hat-trick helped Rossington Main to a 5-3 victory at Louth Town.
In the final, they will take on Glasshoughton Welfare who won 3-2 at local rivals Pontefract Collieries, Dell Pollock with the winner in the 109th minute.
There was disappointment for two KoolSport NCEL sides as they were beaten in County Cup Finals.
Grimsby Borough were defeated 2-1 by Blackstones at Lincoln City's Sincil Bank ground in the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy.
Matthew Oswin had seemingly forced extra-time with his equaliser for Boro but Addie Staffieri struck the winner for the United Counties League side in injury time.
And, Thackley went to Bradford City's Valley Parade ground in the West Riding County Cup Final and took Blue Square Bet North side Guiseley to extra-time.
Nicky Matthew's double gave them the hope that they could perform a major giantkilling act but, in the end, they were beaten 4-2 although they can very proud of their performance.
Parkgate are through to the Final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup after they beat EvoStik League side Sheffield.
Two goals from Chris Wood helped them to a 3-3 scoreline after 90 minutes and James Ghaichem struck the winner in extra-time.
They now take on Stocksbridge Park Steels at Hillsborough next month for the trophy.
