NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #62
10th April, 2011
The top three sides in the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division all won on Saturday to keep the title race alive but Farsley AFC remain the overwhelming favourites.
They came from behind to beat visitors Winterton Rangers 2-1 and keep a twelve point lead over second-placed Parkgate, having played three games more.
James O'Neill struck for Rangers on 25 minutes but a quick double from Mark Bett at the start of the second period kept them on course to be crowned champions.
They will do that if they win their final two matches.
But, Parkgate and Bridlington Town are pushing them all the way with victories of their own.
Parkgate were 5-1 winners at Pickering Town, with Chris Wood's first-half brace added to after the interval by goals from William Senior, Ashley Worsfold and Keir Hannity.
And, Bridlington Town, who are third and thirteen points behind Farsley but with four matches in hand, won 3-1 at bottom side Dinnington Town.
Scott Phillips' ninth-minute opener, along with an early second half strike from Lee Wright and Tom Lee's late goal claimed the points.
There was a consolation in the 88th minute from Matthew Smith for the hosts, but they were relegated by the defeat.
Hallam and Arnold Town are the two sides trying to avoid going through the trapdoor with them.
Hallam lost 2-1 at home to Tadcaster Albion who move up into fourth with their victory.
Martin Brissett had the hosts ahead early on but a Jonathan Bownes own goal and Carl Stewart's winner on the hour condemned them to their twelfth league defeat at Sandygate this season.
Arnold Town pulled a further point away from Hallam with a 3-3 draw at home to Maltby Main, but they will have been disappointed not to have gained all three points.
The Eagles were 3-1 up going into the last half-hour but Lee Mellon and Lee Whittington restored parity for the visitors.
Arnold are now nine points clear of Hallam but the Sheffield side have two games in hand.
Liversedge, who are seventeenth, gave themselves some breathing space from the relegation fight with a 3-2 win at home to Lincoln Moorlands Railway.
Elsewhere, Scarborough Athletic played out a 0-0 draw at home to Nostell Miners Welfare and there were also no goals between Thackley and Long Eaton United whilst Selby Town won 1-0 at home to Brighouse Town.
With the Division One title sewn up by Staveley Miners Welfare last weekend, the chase is now on for second spot and promotion.
Pontefract Collieries kept themselves in with a shout with their 2-0 win at home to the champions, Will Turl and Danny Frost with the goals that keep them in fourth place.
Yorkshire Amateur won by the same scoreline at home to Grimsby Borough to remain well entrenched in the coveted runners-up spot, Curtis Bernard and James Douglas with their goals in the final quarter of the game.
But, a 4-0 home win over Leeds Carnegie means third-placed Barton Town Old Boys keep firmly on their tail.
And, Handsworth remain in the hunt in fifth - just - as an injury time winner from the penalty spot earned them a 3-2 win at Rossington Main.
Elsewhere, there were away victories for AFC Emley, Eccleshill United and Glasshoughton Welfare.
And, there were home wins for Hemsworth Miners Welfare, Louth Town and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
