NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #60
3rd April, 2011
Farsley AFC took a big step towards winning the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division title on Saturday whilst congratulations to Staveley Miners Welfare who got the point they needed to lift the Division One crown.
Two first-half goals from Gareth Grant and a second-half strike from Ben Jones earned Farsley a 3-0 victory at Maltby Main as their two title challengers both lost ground.
Second-placed Parkgate were held to a 2-2 draw at Armthorpe Welfare with the hosts netting a late Ben Muirhead penalty to share the spoils.
And, Bridlington Town notched up their second consecutive goalless draw at home to Arnold Town.
It means that Farsley have their fate in their own hands for the first time.
They are nine points ahead of Parkgate who have two games in hand and eleven ahead of Bridlington who have played three matches fewer.
Arnold's point at Bridlington keeps them eight points clear of the bottom two as the battle to avoid relegation continues.
Basement side Dinnington Town were beaten 4-3 at Nostell Miners Welfare in a match where they were leading 3-1 until the final quarter-of-an-hour.
Ernest Boafo struck twice and Chris Nortey got the winner on 87 minutes to mean that Dinnington are now all-but assured a bottom two finish.
Next-to-bottom Hallam have kept their survival hopes alive but would have wanted more out of an extraordinary game at Winterton Rangers.
A breathtaking start saw three goals in the opening four minutes as Jack Cross and Andy Walkden netted for the home side with Morgan Sellars scoring for Hallam in between.
Aaron Moxon made it 2-2 before Liam Wilkin restored Winterton's lead in the 21st minute.
But, Hallam levelled once more through Dwayne Wiley and Moxon hit two more to complete his hat-trick and give the visitors a 5-3 lead by half-time.
Wilkin, however, immediately halved the deficit in the second period and Danny Barlow got the equaliser on 76 minutes, the final goal in a remarkable 5-5 draw.
Seventeenth-placed Liversedge drew 1-1 at Thackley and, having played the most games of any side in the Premier Division, they will be nervously looking over their shoulder to see what the sides below them do with their matches in hand.
Rudy Funk's first game in charge of Scarborough Athletic did not go as planned as they were beaten 5-0 at Pickering Town whilst Brighouse Town lost 4-0 at home to Hall Road Rangers.
Josh Schofield netted a dramatic 88th minute winner for Lincoln Moorlands Railway in a 4-3 victory at Tadcaster Albion, to leap over their hosts into fourth spot.
And, a couple of second half goals saw Long Eaton United win 2-0 at home to Selby Town.
It is not very often that a draw is celebrated in such a massive fashion but that is what happened at Inkersall Road as Staveley Miners Welfare and Louth Town shared a 2-2 scoreline.
It meant that Staveley had the point they needed to be Division One champions, Ryan Damms with both their goals whilst Dan Pawson and Carl Martin found the net for Louth.
The race is now on for second spot with Yorkshire Amateur keeping themselves firmly entrenched there after their 2-0 victory at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Danny Forrest and Curtis Bernard scoring in each half.
Third-placed Handsworth moved above fellow promotion chasers Pontefract Collieries with a 3-1 home win over their rivals.
David Cockerill and Dan Smith had them two up before Luke Smith converted a penalty for the away side just before the hour mark.
Sam Smith made sure of the victory with three minutes remaining.
Barton Town Old Boys climbed up into fourth with a last-gasp 1-0 victory at Shirebrook Town, Gareth Barlow with the injury time strike.
And, Steve Kenworthy's hat-trick helped AFC Emley to a 7-0 home win against Brodsworth Welfare, who will now finish bottom of the table.
Marcus Edwards also took home the match ball as he scored all Eccleshill United's goals in their 3-2 win at Askern Villa.
Oliver Trigg's last minute winner saw Teversal triumph 2-1 at Grimsby Borough whilst Appleby Frodingham were 2-1 victors over visitors Bottesford Town and Rossington Main won 3-2 at Glasshoughton Welfare.
