NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #64

11th April, 2010

The top two sides in the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division both won on Saturday to keep the title race very much alive.

Bridlington Town stay three points clear at the top after recovering from a goal down and the blow of having their goalkeeper sent off before the midway point of the first half to win 4-1 at Hallam.

They were behind until just before the hour mark when Wayne Wallace began the remarkable turnaround that was continued by Craig Hogg and then completed by a double from Tom Chippendale in the last ten minutes.

Second-placed Armthorpe Welfare also left it late to turn their game around, Liam Hardy striking twice and then Craig Fletcher also netting in the last twenty minutes as they beat visitors Selby Town, 3-0.

Rainworth Miners Welfare, who are third, kept themselves in with a narrow shout of catching up with the top two as they won 4-2 at home to Maltby Main.

The Wrens cruised into a four-goal lead by the 66th minute with James Whitehead, Brendan Sweeney, Cameron Fearon and Craig Mitchell all finding the net.

But, Main then pulled two goals back as their hosts went to sleep with Adam Shepherd and then Rob Branagan converting their chances.

Thackley lost some ground in fourth as they drew 3-3 at Hall Road Rangers and, in fact, needed an injury time equaliser from Shaun Airey to make sure of a point.

Scarborough Athletic head the pack chasing fifth spot after their 6-0 win at home to Shirebrook Town.

The visitors, who are now virtually certain of finishing in the bottom two as a result of their defeat, had a miserable day all round.

They had to start the game with ten men after a car carrying four of their players broke down on their way to Queensgate.

Joel Hartley and Craig Palmer had the Seadogs two-up by the break before Palmer added two more for his hat-trick and Scott Phillips also grabbed a brace as Scarborough begin to regain some form.

Hot on their heels are Winterton Rangers and Pickering Town who also both won.

Liam Wilkin's 14th minute strike was enough for Winterton in a 1-0 victory at home to Liversedge whilst Liam Salt's last-gasp winner snatched Pickering a 3-2 scoreline at Parkgate.

Eighth-placed Arnold Town have almost certainly guaranteed themselves a Presidents Cup spot for next season after their 3-0 win at Long Eaton United, Joe Naylor with two of the goals in the opening eighteen minutes added to by Chris Hudson's strike just before half-time.

Lincoln Moorlands Railway's 6-2 victory at home to bottom side Brodsworth Welfare helped them become almost safe from relegation.

Joshua Schofield and David Frecklington both found the net twice as they moved six points away from Shirebrook with the Derbyshire side having only two games left and a far inferior goal difference.

Nostell Miners Welfare were 1-0 winners over visitors Dinnington Town, Josh Hope with the solitary goal on thirteen minutes.

Brighouse Town won the battle of the top two in Division One, beating hosts Tadcaster Albion 3-1 to go back to the summit.

Lee Burgess had them ahead by the break before Danny Toronczak and Wayne Crossley made certain of the win in the second period, Darren Brandon getting a late consolation for the Brewers.

Brighouse are three points clear but have only one game left whilst Tadcaster have three to play.

Third-placed Leeds Carnegie moved to within five points of the top two as they won 3-1 at home to the side just below them, Staveley Miners Welfare.

Christopher Coy had put the visitors ahead on 28 minutes but Andy Cooper, Alex Smith and Chibuzor Chilaka made sure the second half and the match belonged to the hosts.

Pontefract Collieries made it five wins out of five with their 5-3 victory at bottom side Worsbrough Bridge Athletic to consolidate fifth place.

They're now four points clear of AFC Emley who drew 1-1 at home to Rossington Main, Micky Amos getting Emley a point with a 40th minute equaliser after Jonathan Mirfin had put the visitors ahead on the quarter-hour mark.

In the remaining five games, only Teversal were home victors as they beat Grimsby Borough 1-0.

Askern Villa were 4-2 winners at Bottesford Town, helped by a Tom McLaughlin brace whilst Barton Town Old Boys move up to seventh after James Atkinson scored to give them a 1-0 victory at Eccleshill United.

Lee Woods got what proved to be the winner in the 85th minute for Appleby Frodingham as they took all three points in a 4-3 victory at Glasshoughton Welfare.

And, Yorkshire Amateur ensured they will not finish in the bottom two with a 3-1 win at Hemsworth Miners Welfare.
