NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #62

4th April, 2010

Bridlington Town have extended their lead at the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division despite dropping points at home at the weekend.

They were held to a 1-1 draw by Long Eaton United but their closest rivals, Armthorpe Welfare, were beaten to see the gap grow to three points.

Bridlington had started perfectly with Craig Hogg opening the scoring for them after just two minutes.

But, they were left stunned when Adam Campbell levelled with seventeen minutes remaining.

Frustration, though, would have turned to delight when they heard that Armthorpe had been beaten by Pickering Town.

Michael MacNaughton scored for the Pikes in the opening seconds and Chaz Wrigley wrapped up the 2-0 victory midway through the second half.

Pickering go up to sixth, ahead of Scarborough Athletic whose game at Arnold Town was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Third-placed Rainworth Miners Welfare took advantage of the top two's slip-ups as they went to bottom side Brodsworth Welfare and were 9-0 winners.

The hosts were not helped by the sending off of their keeper halfway through the opening period.

Ant Lynam grabbed a hat-trick, with one from the penalty spot, whilst Craig Mitchell, Brendan Sweeney and Massiah McDonald all picked up two goals each for Rainworth's biggest win of the season.

The Wrens are now eight points behind Armthorpe and eleven away from Bridlington so are not giving up on their promotions hopes just yet.

Two points behind Rainworth are Thackley who were 4-0 winners at home to Hallam.

Shaun Airey had them ahead just prior to the interval before Rob Morgan made it two on 53 minutes and Matthew Mathers ensured victory with goals number three and four in the final quarter of the game.

The battle to avoid being in the bottom two alongside Brodsworth is continuing to hot up.

Shirebrook Town, who currently occupy nineteenth, suffered a blow with a 4-1 defeat at home to Winterton Rangers.

Liam Wilkin grabbed a hat-trick for the visitors after Danny Frost had given them an early lead, Josh Wain snatched a late consolation for the Langwith Road side.

They remain behind only on goal difference of Lincoln Moorlands Railway who were beaten in an extraordinary game at Liversedge.

The home side stormed into a 5-0 lead after just 49 minutes with a Gary Birchall brace and three from Andy Philp.

But, after that Railway almost staged the most unbelievable comeback as Luke Evans, Adam Gilbert, Ben Good and then Jack McGovern had pulled them back to within one goal of their hosts with just six minutes remaining.

They could not, however, get the fifth that would have earned them a point as the home side held on.

Seventeenth placed Nostell Miners Welfare moved one point further away from Shirebrook and Railway with a 1-1 draw at Maltby Main.

And, in a midtable clash, Dinnington Town won 1-0 at home to Parkgate.

Brighouse Town's lead at the top of Division One has grown to three points after they won 2-1 at third-placed Leeds Carnegie.

Danny Toronczak struck with a late header to pick up the vital victory for the visitors.

Second placed Tadcaster Albion lost ground as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Bottesford Town.

It looked like it was going to be the perfect afternoon for Taddy when Tom Woolard and Terry Taylor had them two-up after sixteen minutes.

But, a Mark Anderson penalty pulled one back for Bottesford on the half-hour and Craig Mitchell made sure of a point for the visitors on 71.

Fourth-placed Staveley Miners Welfare kept themselves in the promotion hunt as a Ryan Damms double helped them to a 2-0 win at Askern Villa.

AFC Emley remain fifth after they won 3-1 at Yorkshire Amateur, Marc Townsend, Sean Hazelden and Alex Thomas with their goals.

Barton Town Old Boys were 4-2 winners over visitors Appleby Frodingham whilst Jason Stokes' 80th-minute strike earned Rossington Main a 1-0 victory at home to Glasshoughton Welfare.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare move up to sixth after their 1-1 draw at Teversal, Damion Liddle cancelling out a home opener from Kyle Gee-Pemberton.

And, Eccleshill United won 2-0 at Grimsby Borough to move out of the bottom two.
