NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #28

12th November, 2009

Honours were even as two of the top sides in KoolSport NCEL Premier Division met at Queensgate in midweek.

Scarborough Athletic remain the leaders, two points ahead of Armthorpe Welfare who climb to second after the 1-1 draw.

The hosts took the lead on 34 minutes through a Scott Phillips penalty but Armthorpe quickly levelled, courtesy of James Walker.

Liversedge move up to seventh after a 5-1 win at home to Shirebrook Town who drop into the bottom two on goal difference.

Paul Walker claimed a hat-trick whilst Joel Ettiene picked up a brace for Sedge whilst a late Daniel O'Donnell penalty was the visitors' consolation.

Bridlington Town are the first team through to the Semi-Finals of the Presidents Cup after a 3-1 win at Arnold Town.

Alex Rhodes had them ahead by the interval before Ashley Allanson and Phil Harrison made sure of the victory by the 68th minute. Tony Law got Arnold's solitary strike.

Leeds Carnegie are the third to book their place in the last four of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, joining Bottesford Town and Staveley Miners Welfare, following their 2-1 win at Askern Villa.

Villa led through Kyle Hawthorne's 24th minute opener but Chris Hume and Jack Thompson found the net for Carnegie in the last quarter of the match to progress.

Hallam and AFC Emley both provided shocks in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Second Round by beating higher ranked opposition.

Simon Asquith and Scott Preece earned Hallam a 2-1 win at home to Frickley Athletic whilst AFC Emley beat visitors Worksop Town by the same scoreline with goals from Steven Kenworthy and Micky Amos.

A Michael Blythen hat-trick helped Dinnington Town to 5-2 victory at Handsworth but, despite a valiant effort, Rossington Main went down 7-0 at home to Sheffield.

In the two all NCEL ties, Nostell Miners Welfare were 2-1 victors at Hemsworth Miners Welfare, Josh Hope and Graham Marchant with their goals before Wayne Harratt scored from the penalty spot in the 75th minute for Hemsworth.

And, Staveley Miners Welfare beat visitors Maltby Main, 4-3.

The game got off to a blistering pace with Adam Shepherd opening the scoring for Maltby before Scott Bates and Andrew Fox put the home side ahead, all within the first nine minutes.

Scott Ellis made it 3-1 on the half-hour and they were 4-2 up by the 50th minute as Fox found the net again to restore their two goal cushion after Greg Mason had brought Main back into the game.

Ryan Smyth got Maltby's third with four minutes remaining but they could not find a fourth to take the game into extra time.

A further thirty minutes were needed, meanwhile, in the week's only Lincolnshire Senior Trophy Quarter-Final - Bottesford Town winning 2-1 at home to Nettleham with Phil Rowland sending them through in the 115th minute.
