NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #27
9th November, 2009
Over 1,000 people watched Scarborough Athletic beat their landlords Bridlington Town 2-1 to go back top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division.
In front of what was the biggest league crowd in almost five years, the Seadogs, who were the away team in this fixture, came from behind to secure the three points after Nathan Hotte had given Brid a sixth-minute lead.
David Hartas and Scott Phillips turned the game around just before the hour mark to put Scarborough two points ahead of a chasing pack of three that includes Bridlington in second place.
Armthorpe Welfare stay third but were made to work for their dramatic 4-3 win at Parkgate.
Liam Hardy and David Buck put them two ahead by the break but the hosts, with new manager Russell Eagle in the dugout for the first time, showed fighting spirit and pulled one back through Matthew Cardwell.
Hardy got his second and Armthorpe's third on 67 minutes before Leon Wainman made it 2-3 with ten minutes remaining.
Stuart Preston restored the visitors' two-goal cushion as the game went into injury time but Parkgate threatened to come back again with James Mitchell finding the net.
Armthorpe held on, however, for what could be three vital points come the final reckoning.
Rainworth Miners Welfare were deadly from the penalty spot as they won 3-1 at Liversedge to make it eight league wins in a row and keep them fourth.
Scott Ryan had put the hosts ahead on five minutes before Brendan Sweeney levelled and Nigel Jemson scored from the spot just prior to half-time.
Lewis Trimmer then made sure of the win, also from twelve yards, but the Wrens had to wait until the 89th minute for that comfort.
There's now an eight point gap between fourth and fifth as Selby Town were beaten 2-1 at home by Hallam, Joe Boggild's 59th minute strike proving the winner as the visitors came from behind for the win.
Thackley move up to sixth after a 4-3 win at home to Long Eaton United, a game that the away side were leading 2-1 at the break.
But, the hosts were helped out by a Matthew Morgan brace after the interval to pick up the points.
Brodsworth Welfare are now nine points adrift at the bottom of the table after a 3-0 home loss to Nostell Miners Welfare.
Dave Nicholas, Tom Hope and Neil Beardsmore condemned them to their fourteenth defeat of the season.
The gap has increased between themselves and Lincoln Moorlands Railway as Lincoln went to the side just above them, Shirebrook Town, and won 2-1.
Lee Beesley and Tom Garrick put them in control at Langwith Road before a late consolation for the home side was scored by Lewis Bentley.
The other three games in the top flight all saw comfortable wins for the home side.
A Robert Sanderson own goal, followed by strikes from Ricky Law and Tony Law, provided Arnold Town with a 3-0 home win over Winterton Rangers.
Dinnington Town were 2-0 victors at home to Maltby Main and a Liam Salt brace helped Pickering Town to a 4-0 win against Hall Road Rangers.
It's as you were in Division One after the top four sides all won - but it remains a tight league with only seven points separating the top half of the table.
Tadcaster Albion's 3-0 win at home to Pontefract Collieries means they are still the leaders, Danny King, Guiseppe Downing and Darren Brandon with their goals, all in the last twenty minutes.
Two points behind them are Staveley Miners Welfare and AFC Emley whilst Leeds Carnegie and Askern Villa are a further point away.
Staveley beat Brighouse Town 4-3 at Inkersall Road with Ryan Damms grabbing a double, one from the penalty spot, whilst Emley put a struggling Teversal to the sword.
Antony Leech and Max Joice scored before the interval and then Josh Wright and Craig Marsh put the seal on a very straightforward 4-0 victory.
Leeds Carnegie were 5-2 winners at home to Bottesford Town with a Gary Challinor hat-trick helping them on their way after Bottesford had taken an early lead through Craig Bridge.
And, Villa beat visitors Yorkshire Amateur 4-0, Mark Vickerage scoring twice whilst Daniel Ferguson and James Naylor also found the net to move them up to fifth.
Hemsworth Miners Welfare move out of the bottom three after a 3-2 win at bottom side Eccleshill United.
But, it was a very tight affair that needed a 75th minute winner from Wayne Harratt to bring success to the away side.
They go above Teversal and a Glasshoughton Welfare side who went down 3-2 at Barton Town Old Boys, gunned down by a brace from the home side's new striker, Rob Northen.
Two goals from Jamie Steele grave Grimsby Borough a priceless 3-0 win at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic to move them up to eleventh.
And, Appleby Frodingham are now eighth after claiming their first home win of the season - a 1-0 victory against Rossington Main thanks to a third minute goal from Chris Gibbins.
Only one point had been picked up at Brumby Hall in their previous seven games there whilst they have a 100% record, five wins out of five, on their travels.
