NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #4
21st August, 2009
Five KoolSport NCEL sides made their way through to the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup by winning midweek replays.
A couple of teams kept it very nervy with Staveley Miners Welfare and Bridlington Town needing penalty shoot-outs to progress.
Staveley made it especially nailbiting for their fans as they left it to the death twice to save themselves at home to Squires Gate.
Firstly, Lee Gregory had to hit a spectacular free-kick in injury time to force an extra thirty minutes after Chris Bennett had given the visitors the lead on the hour.
Staveley then went behind again through an Isaac Kusaloka strike on 110 minutes before Spencer Goff left it to the final seconds to claim a 2-2 draw.
They then made sure their fightback was worthwhile by winning 5-4 on spot kicks.
Bridlington also had to come back twice from behind at Esh Winning after Danny Craggs and then Nicky Martin scored first half goals.
Nathan Hotte was the Seasiders' hero on both occasions and Brid then went through 4-2 in the shoot-out.
A Gareth Barlow strike fourteen minutes from time saw Barton Town Old Boys win 2-1 at home to East Midlands Counties outfit, Gedling Town.
Tom Norris and Nathan Watson ensured passage through for Shirebrook Town by the same scoreline at Holbeach United.
In the all-NCEL replay, Selby Town came through 3-1 at Leeds Carnegie although they needed two goals in the last ten minutes from Brenton Leister and Liam Radford to do so.
And, there was disappointment for Teversal as they went down 3-0 at Bourne Town.
Meanwhile, the four KoolSport NCEL League Cup First Round matches were played in midweek and Rossington Main were the only away winners.
Despite going down to a seventh minute penalty from Jordan Riding, they went through 3-1 at Glasshoughton Welfare with a first-half Liam Holmes brace and a late goal from William McGhie.
Brighouse Town needed Mark Brady to come to their rescue twice, once from the penalty spot, to force extra time at home to Askern Villa.
That was after the visitors had taken the lead through, firstly, new signing Kyle Jones and then Dean Wilburn.
With no further score, the match went to penalties which Brighouse won 4-2.
Appleby Frodingham were comfortable 4-0 winners at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic with a Tom Finnigan double finishing off the contest after goals from Ryan Hibbard and Michael Bettney.
And, Steven Kenworthy and Micky Amos struck for AFC Emley in their 2-0 victory over visitors Hemsworth Miners Welfare.
In the Second Round, Rossington now go to Tadcaster Albion, Brighouse entertain Liversedge, App-Frod are at Pontefract Collieries and AFC Emley travel to Brodsworth Welfare.
