NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #3
17th August, 2009
Only six KoolSport NCEL teams secured a place in the next round of the FA Cup in what was a disappointing weekend for our sides.
28 clubs were hoping to make it through to the Preliminary Round of the world's oldest Cup competition.
Fifteen of them were knocked out whilst seven get another chance in midweek replays.
Hallam were the biggest winners with a 6-1 victory at North West Counties side, Abbey Hey.
After going behind early on, Simon Asquith's hat-trick and goals from Daniel Smith, Ryan Tate and Lee Naughton made it a comfortable afternoon for the Sandygate side.
Also progressing away from home were Long Eaton United, Winterton Rangers, Rossington Main and Rainworth Miners Welfare.
Long Eaton went through at the expense of hosts Barwell as Jared Holmes and Craig Mitchell's first-half strikes earned them a 2-1 scoreline.
Goals in the last fifteen minutes from Gary Jones and Liam Wilkin saw Winterton progress at Dunkirk whilst a Lewis Hilton double helped Rossington beat fellow NCEL side Maltby Main, 3-1.
Rainworth won 3-0 at Radford, with goals from Julian Topliss, Matthew Baxter and Massiah McDonald.
The only NCEL team to win at home were Nostell Miners Welfare who, thanks to Jimmy Jagger and Colin Williamson, progressed with a 2-1 victory over Oldham Town.
Bridlington Town, Shirebrook Town and Teversal all now face midweek travel after being held at home.
Bridlington go to Esh Winning following a goalless draw whilst Reiss Linsay's 73rd minute goal made sure Shirebrook drew 2-2 with Holbeach United.
And, Teversal travel to Bourne Town after a 1-1 scoreline at Carnarvon Street.
NCEL duo Selby Town and Leeds Carnegie face each other again at Throstle Nest on Monday night after a goalless draw.
Staveley Miners Welfare and Barton Town Old Boys have home replays after 2-2 draws at Gedling Town and Squires Gate, respectively.
The NCEL sides to bow out at the first stage of the competition on Saturday were AFC Emley, Armthorpe Welfare, Arnold Town, Bottesford Town, Dinnington Town, Eccleshill United, Hall Road Rangers, Lincoln Moorlands Railway, Liversedge, Maltby Main, Parkgate, Pickering Town, Pontefract Collieries and Thackley.
And, sadly, they were joined on Sunday by Scarborough Athletic whose first ever FA Cup match ended in a 2-1 defeat at home to Guisborough Town.
The Seadogs were also reduced to ten men during the game with Jamie Waltham having to be dragged away from the referee by his teammates following his dismissal.
Investigations are set to begin into reports that the official's shirt was ripped during the incident.
Tadcaster Albion stormed to the top of Division One with a 5-0 win at home to Glasshoughton Welfare, who are now bottom.
Steve Rollinson got the only first half goal before Derminderpal Panesar scored just after the interval, Graeme Whitehead bagged a brace and Alan Jackson also found the net for the home side.
Appleby Frodingham and Askern Villa both made it two wins out of two as Liam Johnson scored both App-Frod's goals in a 2-0 win at Yorkshire Amateur and Lee Wilkinson struck late on for a single-goal triumph at Brighouse Town for Villa.
And, Worsbrough Bridge Athletic remain unbeaten after their 2-1 win at Grimsby Borough, Lee Garside and Dean Shirt put them two-up before a late Dean Newby consolation for the hosts.
