NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #1

9th August, 2009

Hallam sit top of the first Premier Division table of the new KoolSport NCEL campaign having thumped nine past hosts Brodsworth Welfare.

Andrew Wood and Gary Hibbert gave them a perfect start with a two-goal cushion after just four minutes of the season.

Gary Mundy pulled one back for Welfare but, after that, it was all the visitors as Simon Asquith and Matthew Griffin gave them a 4-1 advantage by the break.

Wood got his second and Gavin Gould struck their sixth before Joe Boggild netted a five-minute hat-trick at the end of the game to compound Brodsworth's misery.

Both of the top flight's new sides tasted defeat in their first games since promotion from Division One last season.

Scarborough Athletic went down 2-1 at Nostell Miners Welfare, with the hosts playing most of the game with ten men after Tom Williamson was shown a red card.

Darren Rushton snatched the victory for Nostell with a last gasp winner - that was after Graham Botham had restored parity for the Seadogs following a Paul Bedford opener.

Rainworth Miners Welfare were given a rough welcome to the Premier Division as they lost 4-0 at home to Winterton Rangers, thanks to an early Rob Northen strike, two goals from Gary Jones and another from Robert Sanderson.

Long Eaton United are many people's outside bet for the title after a very good pre-season but they ended up on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline at Maltby Main.

Two goals from Craig Palmer helped Bridlington Town to a 4-1 victory over visitors Pickering Town whilst Mark Clifford's 12th-minute strike saw Arnold Town win 1-0 over Parkgate, the first time in over 40 years that their opening game was at home.

The remaining four matches all went the way of the visiting side with Selby Town enjoying a 5-0 rout of hosts Thackley.

Liam Radford struck twice whilst a Steve Lyon goal made it 3-0 by the interval before Lyon got his second and Stuart Dove completed the scoring with fifteen minutes remaining.

Liam Hardy bagged an opening day hat-trick as Armthorpe Welfare won 3-0 at Shirebrook Town whilst Dinnington Town claimed a single goal victory at Lincoln Moorlands Railway, thanks to Grant Allott's 64th-minute strike.

And, Hall Road Rangers were 2-0 winners at Liversedge with goals from James McGarry and Phil Jackman.

Tadcaster Albion are the early leaders in Division One, a league that many believe will be a tight one this year.

And, that view's been bolstered by the opening day's results in which Taddy were the only side to win by more than one goal.

They were 3-1 victors at Rossington Main with Derminder Pal Panesar making sure of the win on 89 minutes after Kevin Smith and Danny Pitts had also found the net.

Bottesford Town, Brighouse Town and Appleby Frodingham all picked up 3-2 wins on their travels.

It was a strange match all round for Bottesford at Teversal where the game was delayed for around forty minutes due to the non-appearance of one of the match officials.

And then, when the game got underway, three penalties were awarded in the opening quarter of the match with Paul Chatterton netting twice for Bottesford before Dean Short did the same for the hosts.

Short levelled on 38 minutes but Chatterton claimed his hat-trick with seven minutes remaining to give the visitors the win.

Brighouse came from two-down to beat hosts Eccleshill United who had gone into the lead with goals from Lee Cornforth and Darren Fletcher in the opening twenty minutes.

Lee Malcher started the comeback just before the hour mark and then Kieran Corley and Damian Melvin made sure of the win with twelve minute to go.

And, Danny Ricketts grabbed the winner for App-Frod at Hemsworth Miners Welfare with ten minutes remaining.

That was after Damion Liddle had scored a brace for the home side and Ryan Hibbard had done likewise for the visitors.

James Naylor and Curtis Walker struck in the first twenty-two minutes to earn Askern Villa a 2-1 victory at home to Barton Town Old Boys.

Pontefract Collieries snatched a point a 2-2 draw with visitors Yorkshire Amateur, Carl Fothergill with an injury-time equaliser.

And, the spoils were shared by the same scoreline in Staveley Miners Welfare's match at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
