Fox Takes Over At Thackley

21st June, 2008

Thackley have named Billy Fox as their new manager.

Fox was assistant boss at Premier Division rivals Hallam last season and is currently working for Championship newcomers Doncaster Rovers, coaching with their Academy.

"I'm delighted to have been offered this position as the club have a lot of potential and I can?t wait to get started," the Sheffield-based UEFA B licence holder told Telegraph & Argus.

"I have met the players and will be encouraging them to stay on with us but I will also be bringing in a few new faces.

"The only thing that concerns me at this moment is the lack of pre-season friendlies.

"The club said they held off until they had made the appointment, so now that's done I want the games confirmed.

"The ones they had in the pipeline are perfect; all realistic opponents that will give the players a test."

Thackley have retained the services of Sean Regan, who was John Boyle?s assistant last season, and Fox will be bringing Nigel Ransome with him.

The three will work together, which will help the new man settle in and maintain stability at the club.

Boyle Leaves Dennyfield

25th May, 2008

Thackley AFC have parted company with long-serving manager John Boyle.

Club Secretary Christopher Frank said: "The decision to release John from his responsibilities was arrived at only after lengthy and heartfelt deliberation within the committee.

"He leaves with our genuine best wishes and sincerest thanks.

"During his five years in charge, John has produced some remarkable results on the admittedly limited budget at his disposal.

"His replacement will need to be as equally resourceful, if not more so, if the club is to match present off-field developments by progressing to the Northern Premier League - which is our prime objective."

Interested parties are invited to submit an application detailing coaching qualifications, past achievements and future expectations to Thackley AFC, c/o 2 Belle Vue Close, Thackley, Bradford, BD10 8PF by Saturday 7th June.

Interviews will be held shortly afterwards.

Player Ban Shock For Boyle

14th October, 2007

Thackley manager John Boyle's mood changed from delight at the start of last week to frustration by the end of it after losing another player to suspension.

The boss drafted in former Guiseley forward Danny Forrest and former Bradford Park Avenue winger Paul Helliwell.

But, striker Nicky Matthews misses five games, a ban that started at the weekend at Selby Town.

"Nicky was sent of in a five-a-side match at the GOALS Centre at Hanson School in a kickabout game," said Boyle.

"I didn't even know that came under the West Riding County FA banner and was very disappointed to find that he was banned for so many games because of it.

"Fortunately we have our squad bolstered by the two new signings and they are permanent transfers.

"We picked Danny up from Harrogate Railway Athletic in the UniBond League.

"He is proven at that higher level and Paul broke into Avenue's first team when they were in the Conference North."

Regan Chooses Thackley Over Scunny

20th July, 2007

Coach Sean Regan will definitely be helping Thackley in the coming season after turning down an approach from a Football League outfit.

Regan has been working within the youth set-ups at League clubs and initially decided to come to Thackley to work with an open age team as he works towards his FIFA pro-licence.

Scunthorpe United got wind of the move and offered him a role, which he did consider but chose not to accept.

"We look at it as a massive boost to our backroom staff and a huge compliment to Thackley football club," said manager John Boyle, who former Thackley player Regan had expressed a desire to work alongside.

"We thought we had lost him but he went to talk to family, friends and contacts in the game. When he came back and said he would honour his original promise and stay with us instead, it was a surprise. We asked him not to rush such a big decision and take a few days.

"After thinking it over he said he was very committed to Thackley, wanted to stay and we are chuffed to bits. He has already had a major impact.

"The players are loving it, they are having a bit of fun, developing their skills and really building up their fitness."

Regan Blow For Thackley

11th July, 2007

Thackley will now not benefit from the experience and expertise of coach Sean Regan after a late approach to him by Scunthorpe United.

Regan had been working with the academies of Sheffield United and Wednesday over the past few years.

However, now working towards his A licence, he had to be involved with an open-aged side, so he came to Dennyfield.

Thackley boss John Boyle said: "Unfortunately for us, Sean was offered a job at a full-time outfit after he had agreed to join us.

"There was obviously no decision to be made - Thackley in the Northern Counties East Premier Division or Scunthorpe United in the Football League?

"It was too good an opportunity for him to turn down and he took it up with no bad feeling from this end. We are delighted for him and wish him well in his new position."

Boyle will not be filling the role Regan would have held but he is still on a recruitment drive.

"As a club we are on the lookout for new people with coaching and management skills for our reserve team and academy," added first-team manager Boyle.

"There are several positions that need filling within the club. We would also like to hear from someone with sports injuries qualifications or knowledge to volunteer some of their time to act as a physio.

"All of the three main teams at the club could use someone in that role, or even someone with the most basic first aid training who can act as a bucket man."

Thackley Lose Centre-Defence Duo

6th July, 2007

There will be a void at Dennyfield because of the departure of two stalwarts during the close season.

The curtain has come down on the Thackley careers of club captain Craig Sugden and former England youth international James Riley.

The central defensive pairing had won as many games for Thackley as any sharp-shooting duo up front.

"James has gone to Harrogate Railway Athletic in the UniBond League, and he goes with my best wishes," said Thackley manager John Boyle.

"I really hope he does well. It is a higher level than he played at here but it is one that he can cope with quite easily. He wants to test himself in the UniBond and I have no doubt that he has the ability.

"Suggy is going to Liversedge. I'm also disappointed to lose him - especially to one of our main rivals - but again I wish him all the best.

"He was umming and ahhing about leaving this level of football altogether but has made the best choice.

"This is a big city and Sedge is near his home and his workplace. He can make training or pick-up time for a game in minutes, while it could add an hour to his journey coming over to Dennyfield.

"I would prefer that for him than to see him playing at a lower level. I think the move will do him good."

Boyle added: "As a skipper, Suggy has been a fantastic servant to the club and as an elder statesman a great influence on the younger players."

Meanwhile, the blow has been cushioned a bit by the introduction of new coach Sean Regan.

"Sean has been at Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday over the last few years working with their Academies," said Boyle.

"We are very fortunate to get him. The circumstances are right and he brings a lot to the club.

"Sean has just recently been on a coaching course alongside the likes of Roy Keane, Gareth Southgate and Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton.

"Added to the background he has of coaching youth teams at Football League clubs, he brings a wealth of experience.

"He did actually play here - 18 years back he had a season with our reserves. He is a local lad and obviously a great addition to our staff."

Chris Frank About Replacing Thackley Icon

29th June, 2007

New Thackley secretary Chris Frank feels he has a very tough job on his hands in trying to fill the shoes of his predecessor.

But, he believes the club are in fine shape as they look for fresh challenges.

"I wish I knew how to take over from someone who has done so much for the club. It will certainly be a hard act to follow," said Frank this week as the club gears up for pre-season.

"Stewart Willingham has been in the job since the 1970s and I hope I will also be filling the role for a long time.

"Stewart, Geoff Scott and Steve Paley have done sterling work down the years for this club, which we can all be proud of.

"It has been an astounding achievement by the people who have run Thackley that they have never dipped below the Northern Counties East Premier Division.

"They have handed over the reins now and we - the ones who have been trusted with it - have to treat it as a gift. It is our duty to look after it now and hopefully develop it further.

"We have ambitions but we have all been involved at some level over the last few seasons so we know what it entails - our eyes are open.

"Work has started around the ground, on the playing surface, the training pitch and general stadium maintenance.

"There is a new roof going on the building - probably not the best time to start that project given the recent weather, but we press on.

"As far as myself, John McCreary, who has taken over as treasurer from Steve, and the rest of the committee are concerned the season cannot come around quickly enough.

"What Stewart, Geoff and Steve have left behind is a club with a reputation as one of the most friendly and hospitable in the non-league ranks.

"We will endeavour to keep the best of what has gone before and implement some fresh ideas."
