Rangers Tribute To Youngster

9th December, 2007

Hall Road Rangers bosses have paid tribute to 17-year-old Karl Henry who has tragically died in a road accident.

It is thought that treacherous weather conditions caused the incident in the early hours of Friday morning as the car he was in caught fire.

Police are currently investigating what happened.

Reserve Team manager Darren Wilson told the Official NCEL Website: "I'd like to thank the NCEL for their condolences and also offer our deepest sympathy to Karl's family on behalf of all at Hall Road Rangers and everyone associated with the club and all at Dene Park.

"From a personal point of view as manager of Hall Road Rangers Reserves for whom Karl played, can I say how much we all thought of Karl and how highly we regarded him as a player and valuable member of the club.

"He had broken through to the first team ranks from the under 18's and then the reserves this season and a bright future lay ahead for him.

"The whole club is devastated by his loss and, as a mark of respect, all matches playable this weekend from the under 9's youth team through to the senior team have been cancelled."

Meanwhile, clubs have also been posting their deepest condolences on the Unofficial NCEL Messageboard in support of Hall Road Rangers and Karl's family at this devastating time.

Rangers In Bid To Sign Short

8th November, 2007

Hall Road Rangers could be on the verge of making the biggest signing in the club's history after opening talks with ex-Everton defender Craig Short.

The veteran centre-back is keen to get back into football following his release by Sheffield United after their relegation from the Premiership.

Rangers boss Steve Richards wants to bring his former Scarborough team-mate to Dene Park to help achieve promotion to the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

He told the Hull Daily Mail: "He would be a very good signing if we can get him. I am in discussions with Craig about possibly playing for us. He will fill in and help out if we get injuries."

Short, 39, started his career in 1986 with Pickering Town before moves to Scarborough and Notts County.

He left Meadow Lane in 1993 to join Derby County before moving to Everton.

He then signed for Blackburn Rovers in 1999, making 114 starts and played in two UEFA Cup games.

He left Ewood Park in 2005 to join the Blades and helped to win promotion to the top flight.

He postponed his retirement to help boost their Premiership squad last season, but made just two appearances in the League Cup.

Rangers chairman Bob Smailes said the club's bid to sign him is a statement of intent by the Dunswell-based side.

Smailes told the Mail: "We're more determined than ever this year to achieve promotion and the club are certainly heading in the right direction.

"If we can secure Craig's services it will be a big help in achieving our aim of being a UniBond division side in the next three years."

Hall Road Ready For Barton Test

9th August, 2007

Hall Road Rangers face a stern opening day fixture in this season's Northern Counties East League First Division.

Barton Town Old Boys are the first visitors to Dene Park.

With pre-season over and with his summer signings now bedded in, manager Steve Richards just wants to get on with things.

He knows that Town will be a hard team to break down and have a lot of local players themselves.

"Town manager Neil Buckley has publicly stated his side are going to challenge for the title having come up last season," said Richards.

"I don't really know much about them but they are a side who are stepping up a level in quality.

"But, we have made some good signings and would like to be there or thereabouts."

Richards is able to recall Shaun Baker, Dave Ingram and Jamie Barnwell to the squad from last week which drew 1-1 with Selby Town.

This will strengthen the side all over the park as Rangers go looking for a win.

Pre-Season Boost For Rangers

30th July, 2007

Paul Palmer scored his first goal for Hall Road Rangers with a thundering 56th-minute penalty to earn a 1-1 draw against Bridlington Town.

It was the result Rangers deserved against their higher division opposition and another pleasing performance.

For manager Steve Richards it was a change to his system and it worked for him.

"We changed it to 4-4-2 and the system worked better for us than playing with the lone striker," he said.

"It was another pleasing performance in what was a very competitive game from both sides. I still feel there are one or two areas in which we need to improve, but our fitness is now getting somewhere near.

"We created a lot more chances and should maybe have had a few more goals but we didn't.

"I still think some of our defending was na?ve at times but it's understandable at this time in the season."

Richards Upbeat Despite Loss

26th July, 2007

Despite a 2-0 home defeat to Guiseley last night, Hall Road Rangers boss Steve Richards was very pleased with the way his team had performed.

His side trailed 1-0 at half-time and, in fairness, this would have been a fair result against Terry Dolan's side.

But, for Richards, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance.

"It was our first game and this is always difficult because you have players trying things. You can do all the training in the world but you cannot beat game time to get you going," said Richards.

"We have to remember Guiseley are Unibond players and the squad they have assembled here tonight has cost a lot of money. I think it was a sloppy first goal to concede and we didn't create as many chances as we should have done.

"It was a tight first half and I made quite a few substitutions and we put on a lot of the young lads. The endeavour was very good but they are a bit na?ve in certain areas of their game.

"I thought it was a fluky second goal as it was a cross cum shot and it went in over Leon Sewell. 2-0 looks comfortable and it probably was but 1-0 would have been a fair result."

Richards is still without four of his key players and hasn't ruled out bringing in fresh faces prior to the start of the season.

"We still have Mark Dale, Paul Farley, Leon Rudd and Paul Woodhouse all not available.

"So, it wasn't a bad result and it's always nice to win games but when pre-season comes we are mainly playing teams who are above us.

"What you have to remember is you are not going to beat teams who are three leagues above you.

"This means you have to take the positives out maybe looking at fitness and this was okay but we have another three first team friendly games to go.

"On the back of this we will be looking to bring one or two others in just to freshen things up."

Richards was also pleased with the way his close season signings had performed against Guiseley.

He knows it will take time for them to gel but the more game time they get the better.

"Steve Wilson didn't have a lot to do plus Martin Thacker and Paul Palmer have played together a lot of years.

"It's just about getting a little bit of time for them to get used to playing alongside each other again.

"All in all I have been pleased with the way things have gone so far and I know we'll get better.

"Once we get everyone back then I can sit down and see were we go in terms of the season ahead."

Rangers Keen For Action

25th July, 2007

Former Hull City goalkeeper Steve Wilson makes his debut for Hall Road Rangers tonight and will come up against his old boss Terry Dolan.

Wilson faces Unibond side Guiseley AFC where Dolan is now manager.

The pair were at Boothferry Park in the 90s but will be on opposite sides in tonight's game at Dene Park (ko 7.30 pm).

This will be Rangers' first game of their pre-season after their intended game with Farsley Celtic last Saturday was washed out.

Rangers manager Steve Richards will also give debuts to his other close season signings in Paul Palmer and Martin Thacker.

Rangers have recruited well throughout the close season and will be looking to mount a serious championship challenge.

Tonight's game will give Rangers some valuable game time prior to the start of the season in mid August.

Triple Boost For Rangers

22nd June, 2007

Hall Road Rangers have made a real statement of intent ahead of the new season in signing former Hull City goalkeeper Steve Wilson, one of three new players at Dene Park.

The 33-year-old will be joined by former Goole Town midfielder Martin Thacker and Bridlington Town striker Paul Palmer.

Manager Steve Richards had a big influence on him signing for the club as he has outlined the plans of the club.

"They are a club looking to progress and gain promotion from the Northern Counties East First Division," Wilson told hallroadrangers.com.

"I'm looking forward to coming back to Hull so coming to Hall Road is great for me and my family. It means we can spend more time at home and not a lot of time on the road.

"To be fair I wasn't looking to play this year at all but Steve has come in and sold the club to me.

"I've only been here a couple of times before but have played with Hull here and I know it's a family based club."

After leaving the Tigers Wilson headed to Macclesfield Town before moving to Tranmere Rovers with former City boss Brian Little. He also played non-league football last season for Worksop Town and Mossley.

"I enjoyed my time playing professionally but things didn't turn out for me in the professional game. I then went on to play non-league football so I know what to expect.

"Hopefully, my experience will be good for Hall Road in what they are trying to achieve.

"I know pre-season is just round the corner and it will be hard but the expectations at the club are high and see what goes from there."

Martin Thacker makes a return to the club he was at as a 19-year-old and was at Hull City as a YTS when Wilson was there.

The no-nonsense midfielder has seen time with Bradford Park Avenue as well as winning a lot of trophies at Bridlington Town.

At 28, Paul Palmer has an eye for goals and could well be the 20 goals a season man the club are looking for.

He is another former player who enjoyed six years of success at Bridlington Town and will hopefully perform the same for Rangers.
