Winterton Removed From FA Vase

4th January, 2008

Winterton Rangers have accepted a ruling that they be removed from the FA Vase with fellow NCEL side Pickering Town reinstated to the competition.

An FA Vase Sub-Committee meeting held today discussed the inclusion of Rob Northen in the Third Round match between the two clubs on December 8th.

He played whilst under suspension by the Lincolnshire FA and scored Winterton's opening goal in their 2-1 victory.

After serious consideration, the Sub-Committee decided that Winterton Rangers have breached The FA Vase Rules by playing an ineligible player in the tie as the player was under suspension.

The Sub-Committee decided in accordance with its discretionary powers that Winterton Rangers are removed from the Competition and that Pickering Town are reinstated. The prize fund payment of ?1,200 is now forfeit.

The FA panel accepted that Winterton had not deliberately attempted to breach any rule.

So, no order was made as to costs and no fine imposed as removal from the Competition is deemed sufficient punishment.

The FA Carlsberg Vase Fourth Round Proper tie will now be Merstham v Pickering Town to be played on Saturday 19 January 2008.

Winterton's chairman Dave Crowder, who led the club's delegation at Soho Square, said: "Although we are disappointed with the outcome of today?s hearing, we accept the FA ruling.

"We apologise to the 'team' and supporters and thank them all for their support and understanding during what has been a difficult time for us all.

"An internal enquiry has taken place within the club, and lessons have been learned."

He added: "We still have much to play for with our exciting young side still in all domestic cup competitions and flying high in the league.

"And, whilst this incident is prominent at the moment, it does not take away the players outstanding performances in the NCEL Premier Division this season.

"Our season and 2008 ironically starts with an away game against our friends at Pickering Town, who we wish every success in the next round of the FA Vase."
