Robins Pre-Season Bow Delayed
24th July, 2007
Selby Town's first friendly on Saturday against Chester-Le-Street Town was cancelled due to the deluge of rain that came their way on Friday.
A Club spokesman said: "A league game would have been played on Saturday but, after spending nearly ?3000 on the pitch this close season, it was decided not to risk cutting it up.
"Manager, Bob Lyon is concerned about not getting match practise, but understands our dilemna. Hopefully, tonight's game against Thorpe United will go ahead."
On the first team front, the Robins have lost a couple of players from last season's squad.
Joe Connor has returned to Pickering Town due to work committments, Tom Adams has joined Whitby Town in the UniBond Premier and Adam Mitchell has joined a Norwegian team on a three year deal.
The club admit that all these players will be a loss but wish them well.
The rest of the squad should be signed up this coming week including a few new faces.
Lyon has already confirmed the signing of ex-York City, Guisley and Emley midfielder, Marc Thompson along with ex-York and Whitby Town keeper, Arron Reid, ex-Halifax and Liversedge midfielder, Scott Price and Adam Lee, a former Doncaster Rovers Youth Team player.
The club spokesman added: "He is still looking at other options but he is not prepared to name his targets yet until they are signed and sealed. Watch this space!"
And he hopes that the new-look squad will result in silverware for the club and promotion to the UniBond League.
"Twice in the last three seasons we have missed out on promotion by one point and been beaten in two cup finals, so hopefully this season we can take that final step.
"Statistics tell us that it is our home form that has let us down and the introduction of 'Probably The Cheapest Season Ticket In The World' will help us get a crowd to create an atmosphere the players will respond and perform to.
"?20 to watch nineteen league games with the added bonus that every time you attend you get ?1 worth of raffle tickets for a ?300 draw is surely an offer that will attract people to Flaxley Road.
"We need a minimum of 150 to cover the cost of match officials and, at the moment, we are just over halfway there with 80+ pledges.
"Anyone interested can pick up a form from Otisdale Estate Agents, Selby Times Ofice, Station Inn or at the ground and return the form to the Secretary asap.
"We want to raise peoples awareness that Selby Town FC does exist and raise our profile."
