Brodsworth Groundsman Wins Award
28th June, 2007
John Bedford, who tends to Brodsworth Welfare's ground, is the Sheffield & Hallamshire winner in the FA's Groundsman of the Year competition.
The Award, now in its sixth year, was set up to recognise the contribution of these unsung heroes of the grassroots game and encourage the development of groundmanship.
John, a retired miner, originally from Denaby, has been associated with the club for 35 years.
This is his first year as the groundsman and took on the role as he is now retired and still wanted to help out at the club.
The ground as well as being home to Welfare hosts two junior teams, Under 16's and Under 18's, as well as Doncaster Belles Reserves.
The ground is also used to stage a number of local Cup Finals including, the Four Counties and Doncaster Senior League.
James Hope-Gill, Chief Executive of the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA said: "This award is fantastic opportunity for clubs and players to recognise the wonderful work done by many grounds staff across the area.
"Congratulations to John for winning the award. The work of the groundsmen often goes unrewarded. The award is won by nominations received from peers and colleagues, a terrific way to let the groundsman know his work and diligence doesn't go unnoticed."
The County FA's previous winners from the NCEL were Damon Wormald from Parkgate and Pete Bowden of Sheffield FC.
